I'd heard of her but must admit that's about it. I see that the still just 20 yo Russian was JWR 2.

Jon ,apart from our players you obviously don't follow the womens game too closely. Shnaider won Bad Homburg  on grass beating Donna Vekic in the final. Since Wimbledon she has won Budapest on clay.

She's usually quite distinctive with her headscarf.

You've probably not heard of her Jon because she hasn't done much in Slams and 1000s. Most of her points comes from success in 250s. I have to admit I was a little surprised a few weeks ago to see how highly she was ranked. She seems to have crept up the rankings quietly.

But I'm sure you've seen the name on here before as she's had a couple of notable matches against British players but it's not registered with you as one to remember. She lost to Anna Brogan in Wimbledon qualifying last year. She played and defeated Millie Rajecki in Birmingham R32 this year. There was quite a big deal in other places about that match because, I think, it was the first WTA Tour level main draw match between two players from the same US college programme.

Yes, Shnaider was at NC State for a semester with Millie in 2023, where she was the first woman to reach the Top 100 while at college since Lisa Raymond in 1993. Nobody, including the coaches at NC State, expected her to play college tennis as she was already top 250 when she committed to NC State. But because of sanctions against Russians she had problems traveling and training she was fearful she would have to quit tennis and, having split with her coach, wanting to improve on hard courts and having to be paid prize money in cash because she couldn't get a international bank account she decided to go because it would give her a base in the States.

Thanks Lambda - thats really interesting and the payment in cash aspect, is that still a thing for her - as she is probably earning decent money now?

will remember her name now, for sure!

She also won on hard courts in Hua Hin earlier this year. Can't be a common feat to win titles on all 3 main surfaces in one year.

Nice win for Katie. If she can beat Haddad-Maia she will go a long way to securing a seeding for US Open. Katie has beaten her twice this year already.

Yes. Katie is currently live ranked 33 according to OER, but Mertens is close behind and Badosa is two wins behind. Of all the players ranked above Katie, only Andreeva is not playing in Toronto so I would presume they will all be in the USO. Another win for Katie should lift her three places into a definite seeding position.

Huh? There are 14 players ranked above Katie not playing in Toronto. Andreeva is the only one that doesn't get a penalty counter because she is under 18 it is not a mandatory event for her.

I was looking at OER, but on a second look I see that a number of those players have PN against their name rather than the round. So maybe some of those players might not make it to NY (he says hopefully)
