I hadnt appreciated that they are playing this event for the Irish Open - which is a very historic event and, I believe, was one of the original big tennis events, and dates back to the birth of tennis as a sport. It went through various incarnations and at times wasnt held, but this is the successor to those original events back in the 1870/80s - or it certainly has inherited the title, even if not really the same event
What were deemed the important events back in 1880 are shown in the link above in yellow. There were 4 of them (forerunners to the grand slam concept!!??) and were:
Northern Championships in Didsbury (more recently this became the Manchester Challenger) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_Open
Irish Open (this event is now the Irish Open)
Princes Club Championships (held in Hans Place in Kensington and presumably morphed to become the Queens event we know today?) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince%27s_Club_Championships
Wimbledon/All England Championships
