Had a really good day at Roehampton today and was enjoyable as a first time visit to the NTC. I managed to watch Ella McDonald vs Naiktha Bains. It was a great match especially the 2nd set with Ella coming forward often and putting away some volleys (really has a nice technique). Naiktha has great movement and seemed the more attacking minded player overall but this may have cost her in the critical end to the tiebreak where naiktha hit 3 UFEs in a row which meant Ella was victorious. A very good contest and I can't believe its free to go there! Also saw lots of players milling around including Sonay Kartal and Dan Evans.
L16:- Amelia Rajecki (GBR) WR719 [WC] lost to Eri Shimizu (JPN) WR417 7-5 6-4
COuldn't quite recover from an early break in the second set - 0/4 break points won
I'm really confused by Sonay's want to stick to these 35ks, since last September she has won 5 - I would've thought she would want to try and move up to some higher level ITF events to gain more points and more experience against higher ranked opponents. Obviously winning is always great, but she isn't being challenged much in these events.

Well, to be fair to her, it's not as though she's ONLY played the 35ks
This year, she's also played:
WTA Nottingham
W100 - Ilkley
Wimbledon
W100 Surbiton
W50 Calvi
W75 Porto
And she's had three months off for injury
So that's a good mix, it would seem to me.
And I've speculated that she might want to stay by her physio centre as long as possible, before going stateside, if her injury still needs a little rehab (and the fact she doesn't seem to be the world's biggest fan of travel)
I think she's tested herself quite well, and managed to safeguard a lot of points - she's into the US Open qualis, no? Which must have been her biggest short-term goal
At least Sonay is playing leading up to the US Open albeit in smaller events. Emma R will have only potentially have played 1 event between Wimby and the US Open. Courses for horses?
