Hard to understand why Emma served so passively at key moments in the match. Looked like she struggled to cope with Paula's weight of shot. So many of Raducanu's groundstrokes sat up inviting to be hit for winners; which is what happened.
Tough conditions in the extreme heat.
Paula deserved the win. Hopefully Emma eventually learns her lesson but it seems to happen a lot that she goes into passive mode against someone playing aggressively. Her defensive skills really aren't very good so don't know what she's thinking.
Well done Emma another QF in a WTA 500. Still a work in progress. Thats a result IMO. I dont get some of the negativity given she has always said this year is about building foundations after her multiple surgeries. Plenty to work on with Nick, in conditions that arent favourable to her game.
Agree. Its a shame she lost but another step forward.
Is it Canada Open and Cincinnati next?
Its Toronto, Canada. Emma is in qualies. Im not sure if she has done enough to get a WC, but will be interesting to see what she decides to do with her team. I suppose it will depend on overall preparation for the US open?

The wild cards went to Osaka and Canadians Andreescu, Marino and Stakusic.

Ah thanks TA. Will be interesting then. Iga has withdrawn.

Pretty weak performance, far too passive and reactive often tapping the ball right into Paulas forehand. Maybe she was nervous
Why should she be nervous playing someone she beat comfortably at 16?
A WTA 500 quarter final is still a big match for Emm at this point in her comebackand i would have thought she would have seen this match as a good opportunity.
Its the manner of Emmas defeat that worries me not the result, seemed very passive and reactive, almost reminded me of the Torben Beltz days
What surprised me the most is that she was able to turn it on at 3-5* in the third set and get the break back, only to go back to being passive in the last game. The game is there, she just isn't using the right tactics at the moment.
Great to see Badosa back up the win and make the final after all the injury struggles she's had these past couple of years. Her first final since January 2022. She's won all of her WTA finals to date, but suspect she'll be struggling to maintain that if she faces her good friend Sabalenka in the final. She's up to #44 in the live rankings and has won 14 of her last 18 matches which is a massive turnaround from earlier in the year when I generally thought the dreaded R word was looming quick after another retirement vs Sun in Dubai.
