THere were a couple of breaks but Jack PJ got to serve for the set at 6-5

And missed the easiest of shots on his first point

And then just seemed to crumble, got broken and then was 0-6 down in the TB in the twinkling of an eye

Poulain is not a particularly amazing player

(It was always my slight problem with Jack PJ's tennis as a yougnster - they'd be good shots, nice tennis, but the result always went the other way because it was always a bit 'en vrac', as the French wine idiom goes, a bit all over the place)

What a super match

Max just squeaked the first set - was a break down in the second - clawed it back - played some really solid, really focused tennis - Blake was playing well too - but looked a little vulnerable on important points

Max then saved two SPs when Blake was 6-4 in the TB. And then another one with a really brave crosscrout forehand.

Missed one MP through no fault of his.

And then got the important one

Do so hope he's well and healthy. And no idea where he is with his studies. But Max has always been a bit of a fave. Would be great to see him playing more seriously on the ITF circuit.

That is a great win for Max - with a SF place, what sort of position will he enter (or is re enter) the world rankings at?)

He'll re-enter on Monday in the 1700s because he got a point last week but on Monday week, he should be up into the 1100s. His career high of 765 was set in September 2022 after he reached his previous two singles SFs at Nottingham and Roehampton.

Poullain won't lie down or go away but George Loffhagen has been by far the more frontfoot player - lots more coming to the net than normal, hey, George? And hitting a heavy ball

And thoroughly deserves to have won the first set 7-5

Max lost the first 6-3 (a fair score but was definitely in the match)
And is now a break up in the second
