Week 29 - ITF W50 - Nottingham, Hard

Ella was playing excellently from the bits I saw, but missed a break point at 5-5* and then played a poor tiebreak. She's just recovered from a break down in the third though, now *4-4

Marni was a break up in the third and had points for 5-2* and *5-3 but lost the last four games. Great win for Mimi.

Really enjoyed that match

Ella was under the cosh a bit at the start of that third set

But fought well - and really forced the Japanese youngster to have a wobble - it was pressure that did it

Super win

Marni and Heather need extra points to try to get into US Open qualifying. The cut-off is the 29th July so if they want they can
use next week as well to accumulate more points.

Well done to the youngsters et al. So tough for them breaking through. Not so much sympathy for Marni and Heather they have had plenty of chances over the past few months to gain ranking points.

Well done to Ella again. Now up to live ranked 521 on 97 points and sneaks ahead of Hannah (94 points) as our top ranked teen in the live rankings.

But Heather won, so no sympathy needed today!

Really good win against a prospective banana skin opponent who has in the past reached the quarter finals of Junior GS's in Aus and US and semis of Junior Wimbledon last year.

Good to see Ella getting some results after having a relatively tough year last year. I wonder if she was adjusting her game for seniors and was in transition, or just struggling with injury or the step up. Whatever she's getting some good results.

I am sure there was a post last year saying she had been working on her game. Certainly seems to have done her good - short term pain for long term gain.

Good to see it's working out for her. And it does seem important for some (all?) players to make some adjustments.

Beth had 2 match points in the second set breaker but lost 4 points in a row.

6-3 6-7(6) 4-3*

Keep fighting! Beth beat her in Calvi a couple of months ago.

And she did keep fighting

Right the way to the finish line

Wow, super win, Beth

(and the opponent's 'drop shot' on the second MP in the third was enough to make a coach pull their hair out!)

So that is 9 through to the last 16, with one more from Naiktha v Grace which is yet to start. Pretty good I'd say.
