Charpentier was ranked 114 in 1997. He is now an "oldie" and will be 33 in July. He has played a handful of matches this year, but did not play in 2005 and 2004. I think he may have used a protected ranking, he was ranked 224 in september 2003.
Alex has a fortunate draw here, lets see him capitalise!
That is a great draw. The chances must be okay that as the 19th seed, if Alex gets to the final round he will get a LL spot even if he loses. They seem to drop like flies just before a major.
They have changed the procedure for dishing out the LL spots. Instead of going to the highest ranked loser of the final round of qualifying, names of all losers of frq go into a hat, and there is a draw to see who is awarded the LL spots. Given that five seeds with rankings above Alex's have already been knocked out and we are only half way through the first round, I think Alex must be regretting the change! He'll just have to do it the hard way, or be lucky!
I've always thought it should be done that way in all tournaments, cos you quite often get the situation that the no.1 seed in the qualies knows he doesn't need to win the final round as he knows someone in the main draw has already dropped out. Especially if he's mates with the guy he's playing - he doesn't try very hard and loses it, and they both go through.
Congrats on a great win for Alex, at one stage I was worried that it was going to be a similar match to Parmar v Arthurs, Boggo dominating most of the 1st set and then letting his opponent get back into it. thankfully that didn't happen.
Unfortunately the LTA haven't done their usual match report.
Match stats:
Boggo won 69 points compared to Saoudi's 55. Boggo's 1st serve percentage was an excellent 70% overall. It was 77% in set 1 and 64% in set 2. Alex made 29 unforced errors compared to 22 from Saoudi. Hopefully Alex can get that unforced error count down to about 20 for his rd2 match. Alex won 64% of points on 1st serve and 53% of points on his 2nd serve. Saoudi won 50% of points on his 1st and 2nd serve.
Alex hit 16 winners and Saoudi hit 15.
Alex took 5/10 bps while Saoudi took 2/6.
Alex attacked the net quite a lot, winning 11/18 points at the net - 69% - this suggests that the clay is fairly fast which is good for him. Saoudi only won 44% of points when he came to the net.
Regarding the lucky loser rule, I wish they'd delayed it until Wimbledon as it could affect Alex's chances of making the main draw
However, I agree with Akhenaten, I think it's a good thing and will make things fairer to all the players in the final qualies round.
