OOP for Court 1 tomorrow has Henry & Michael on second; pretty tough for them after 2 matches and such a late finish today; feels like they could have put them on third after Lissey & Marcus' mixed to give them a bit more of a rest. Sure they'll both be fine though and at least it's both of them!

With the Krejcikova vs Rybakina SF looking quite likely to go to ( and now actually going to ) 3 sets, I see that the previously unallocated Neal & Desirae mixed doubles QF has begun on Court 2.

2-1*

After two good wins it was a shame to see Alicia and Cartman go out yesterday. Alicia struggled on her serve in a couple of games and Carty's serve was generally down from the previous game. Too many unforced errors didn't help but hey, that's tennis for you, it happens!

I don't believe Carty's on court antics helped much, just watching I found them an annoying distraction. The constant pointing after every point Alicia won was, well, pointless and annoying, at least he will get a job directing traffic when he retires again. His Crown Prince antics on court belittled the event and for both those players the money at stake was quite substantial, so why do it? I can't believe your game can be focused if you are thinking about which antic you are pulling next, a little bit of dossing is one thing but it was ridiculous yesterday.

In a recent interview Marcus commented on how difficult it was to find a "reliable partner". I don't think anyone watching yesterday will see a steady performer and this might work against him, maybe he should enter the men's next year with Mansoor Bahrami dressed as the court jester and go the whole hog.

Sorry to sound like a grumpy old man, I want Marcus to succeed as all those who worshipped him from their knees back in the days when he was battling away on the futures tour but being the Oliver Hardy of tennis is not what it's about.

Contrast his behaviour with the professionalism of the winner Santiago and it tells you all you need to know.

It was a shame as well that Neal and Desirae couldn'g go further - I thought after being RU's in both AO and FO, they might well win this, they were my tip for it!!

Hsieh and Zielinsky look like a good mixed pair right now and could well take the thing

I agree JonH, I can't believe we didn't have at least a semi finalist in this event, I was convinced a week ago that we would win this one.

I am hugely frustrated in general this year with the performances here and in the men's singles (apart from Fearnley) it's been really poor.

I am hoping HP can save the day by adding a bit of sauce to the mens doubles!

I have confidence in Henry and Harri! They look like they have really hit form since Harri came back from his little time out from injury - they are now top 8 in the live race reagrdless of the final result and Henry will move ahead of Neal and into the top 20 if they win the final.

Really hoping they do it!

Isn't it funny how we all react differently when watching the same thing.  I've always felt the mixed doubles is a fun event and an opportunity for the players to be more relaxed on court than in the events where ranking points are at stake.  I love watching Marcus and I thought the match was great fun and very entertaining.  He was also really encouraging to his partner which I felt helped Alicia who was probably the weakest player.  By contrast I commented at the time how miserable and dour Santiago looked throughout the match.  I accept that was maybe what helped him win, but even so it's important to enjoy the occasion!!  Marcus is who he is and just reacts in the moment.  I don't believe for one moment that he wastes time planning how to react.

the question is, Mark1968, did Marcus act any differently when he/they won in the previous round?

i.e. you say that you think Carty's antics detracted from his game, and made it difficult for him to win (and I didn't see any of it) but as I remember, he was like that in the previous match - lot of pointing, lots of grandstanding

Now, personally, I'm with SuperT, I enjoy it - mixed dubs is just a mess-around, as far as I'm concerned, and the more light-hearted it is, the better

But even taking it more seriously, if he has the same manner whenever, and sometimes he wins matches they're not expected to win and sometimes - obviously - he loses, it's hard to say it's the fault of the antics? Maybe they made him win the round before?

Yeh if you at their previous matches, his 'antics' unquestionably helped them; the second round was won on pure energy from the crowd that he created. There may have been a slight issue with him looking at folks in the crowd when they could have been more 'in the zone' between points, but I doubt it affected things. The real issue was that Lissey couldn't land her serve, which could have been about any kind of nerves and i doubt was linked to Marcus. I hate arrogance, but I only detect good-natured emotions in what Marcus does and I find it impossible to be curmudgeonly about it!
