Weeks 27-28 - The Championships, Wimbledon (grass)

What an extraordinary day, but boy a lot of you have gone in hard on Heather. Yes, she missed chances today, but was still competitive. Let's not forget she has won 9 WTA singles and doubles titles, and a Wimbledon mixed doubles crown. The best days might be behind her, but still a great servant to British tennis.

Lily's result surprised me, particularly after her grass court season to date, bur Korpatsch did have heavy strapping today. Didn't see the match so can't comment on her play, but feels like it was definitely there for the taking which she did.

And as for Sonay, she continues to impress. She's so low key, and yet manages to use the weapons she has really well, and chases down every ball. I hope she can have a good run of staying healthy. Lovely to see her coach Julie Pullin in the stands looking really happy - ironically she never won a match here.

Incredible from all three! I really didn't think Sonay had any chance, so glad she proved me wrong! That's huge for her.

Miyzaki had a great draw, but all credit to her for comfortably beating her opponent. Great paycheques for them both and some lovely points too.

Together with the qualifying points that moves Sonay up 79 places to 219, Lily moves up 14 places to 134 and Emma moves up 19 places to 116.

Would that be good enough for Sonay to make US Open qualifying?

I only saw the last bit of Sonay's match (I'd been at a meeting in Clapham Old Town and saw a text from a friend saying she was doing well as I was heading back to Clapham Junction, so I quickly found a seat on Clapham Common and watched the rest on my phone) but I saw enough to be very impressed - having seen her dismantle Andreeva in Roehampton, I had every confidence that she would give herself a chance today but her forehand looked even better than it did last week, even though you can't usually sense the power as much on TV as you can when you see it live.

Pleasantly surprised to see Lily's win too, that's a big one for her. Her opponent is now on a 6-match losing streak but you have to take chances like that, and she did it in style judging by the scoreline.

Just to add to the upbeat mood

I watched a fair bit of all three of the women's matches who won in the afternoon (not Heather, which was nothing against Hev, I just was out in the morning)

The thing that really struck me about Sonay was how she bossed that match, especailly towards the end

Last year, I clearly remember her looking like a rabbit in the headlights - she lost very quickly, which wasn't really a suprise (playing Keys, from recollection) - but it was the manner - she looked very 'little and lost' out there

But yesterday, she had a bit of a swagger. I thought that's quite common in the middle set - i.e. you lose one, then you bounce back, playing freely, the better-ranked opponent going a little AWOL. And then order is restored and you lose the last one rather easily.

But Cirstea didn't know what had hit her in the third, she looked visibly shocked to me

Sonay looked very fit, and used that forehand so effectively, picking the ball up low and getting that whip she gets, it was brilliant

For Lily, it's true that Korpatsch did look a little under par. I assume it was the strapping. But, from her face and demeanour, it looked right early on as though she'd only win this if someone gave it to her. And Lily didn't. Very neat, tidy job. She must have known that K was not at her best, but she didn't allow that to affect her (as often it can). Just played high percentage tennis. Didn't give K a glimmer of hope. Just perfect.

(I saw less of Emma's match - it was irritating/frustrating - just glad she won in the end)

I don't know if Sonay has got a (relatively) new partner or coach but she was with a man at Surbiton (the guy she went up to at the end of yesterday's match) and previously she'd been on her own whenever I'd seen her so maybe having someone in her corner has helped with her confidence but I agree she looked a lot more assured. Of course I might be completely wrong and he's been around the whole time and I just noticed her with him this year!

I can't seem to find any video clips anywhere which is disappointing given what a great performance everyone says it was cry

Agreed. Shame theres no highlights reel for Sonay particularly, it was a winner fest in the third. An amazing performance. I hope this is a springboard for her. British performance of the day without a doubt.

Have you tried bbc iplayer? Jo Durie was commentating on Sonay's match.

In the grass court pre Wimbledon events I commented that Emma didnt come to the net at all even in matches she was winning comfortably. After watching yesterdays match where her opponent constantly made her come forward her volleying was awful. Most of them were into the net. 2 ways of looking at it. She should have worked on it in her earlier tournaments or her volleying is so bad that it needs to be prioritised over the next 12 months. Somehow I thought that she was a good volleyer in the past. But maybe I was wrong. In which case it will be exploited for sure when she comes up against stronger all court players . Right now she is totally relying on her first serve and the depth of her ground strokes to prevent that weakness being exploited too often.

Disappointing Katie only on court 3. She should be above all those matches scheduled on court 2. You wouldnt get this at any other grand slam. If youre not called Emma the All England Club does not support GB women as much as they do the men.

I'm sure Katie will get upgraded if she gets into the next round. She's on the 4th largest court, not the carpark.

The only match spot you could see her taking is FAA Vs Kokkinakis on no.2 court. Or Zverev over on court 1 (mainly because I don't like him)

Katie should have been on number 1 court instead of Rybakina. Tatiana Maria is a very good grass court player. Its a tough first round.
