RE: Weeks 27-28 - The Championships, Wimbledon (grass)

Maybe Emma should consult Heather Watson about Lulu Sun. In 2024 Heather has lost to  Lulu in qualifying  in Australia and also in the final of the  $50,000 tournament at Roehampton.  Failing that Mika S. might be able to help as she was beaten in the  quarter  final by Lulu. The semi finalist who Lulu beat was Baruntkova, the Czech player runner up at junior Wimbledon  2023 now suspended for a  failed drugs test.

Said it a few days ago Emma could easily make quarters here and only one win away

The win today took Emma back into the live rankings top 100 at 92.

If Emma beats Sun she is likely to play Yastremska WR27 in the QF. Emma has played her twice before and each time Emma had a good lead when Yastremska retired, she has a good chance of getting to the SF against Coco Gauff.

Yastremska went out to Donna Vekic after the match was moved to No 1 court. So it is Vekic or Badosa who will be in the QF.

I think Vekic or Badosa would be a harder test  for Emma than Yastremska would have been. Yastremska is yet to complete a match against Emma. Vekic is a formidable opponent on grass and back in  Wimbledon 2017 ,Jo beat her 12-10  in the final set. (days before 10 point tie break at 6 all in final set.)

So many positives for the GB women this Wimbledon.

This must be one of the best years for a while. There's been drama and tension along with some very fine play and on the whole our women have not been out of their depth.

So pleased to see Emma not only winning matches and playing some fine tennis but actually to be smiling and appearing to be enjoy being back on the court. Something that seemed to be missing from her game for the last few years, understandably at times.

Whilst Katie will be disappointed you have to give a lot of credit to Harriet for hanging on in there and making Katie play one more shot time and time again.
Both Harriet and Emma have reasonable chances of progressing though neither opponent should be underestimated.

Probably best to draw a line under Heather and Lily but Sonay has done brilliantly and for the first set yesterday didn't look out of place against a player who I think will quite possibly win the tournament.

Certainly raining in the bit of London where I am.
If you look on i-player, they've got the covers on, and brollies up, and no play before 12.30 (which is almost certainly going to be pushed back)
No play before about 3 pm, I'm reckoning

I guess theyll be able to play on the indoor courts at 1/1.30 though (this is when that start time doesnt work - they could be playing and fans watching, as opposed to re runs of Emma or Dimitrov from yesterday!)

They should have at least moved CC and Number 1 to 12 and put on 4 matches each.

Poor Lily is getting a bit of heat. She won a round easily!

Im a bit north of London and its clearing up here, hopefully get going sooner than they suggest.

As much as I love Katie Boulter, and appreciate all she has achieved and will go on to achieve, an Emma Raducanu in full flight is something else. Star quality and a flair that is quite compelling.

But just as importantly, Britain will leave Wimbledon with three women in the Top 100, when we were down to one. If Jodie can come back and Sonay stay injury free, that's a nice little group.

Only for one week this century, and probably quite a time further back, have we had as many as 4 in the top 100 ( Baltacha, Keothavong, Watson and Robson, and Laura was WR 100 that week ). So 4 again at some time would be really good to see.

Harriet Dart broken in first game, no wait, that ball was in...but a later one wasn't. 0-1.

I hadn't realised Wang was quite so high.

She got a correct challenge at deuce but it was ridiculous she was allowed it. The point was played, out call made, umpire had announced advantage Dart, both players had moved over, she then looked at her box and asked to challenge. That is not, on any interpretation: "immediate".

0-1*

It doesn't matter so much if you break straight back though 1-1

Yes, Wang is WR42 - I posted the draw after the last round, but it is already five pages back !
