Weeks 27-28 - The Championships, Wimbledon (grass)

Emma has a nice run to the quarter in my opinion

Anne Keothevong saying Jeremy Bates being partially responsible for Sonay's recent success. Really?

Sorry I'm so not a fan so find it hard to give him any credit for anything...

I thought Julie Pullin was coaching Sonay.

To be 100% fair, I did see Bates watching Sonay's matches at qualis
(He was also watching Emily Appleton a lot, there and at Surbiton)
So it is possible that he's come on board and helped Sonay
In which case, great and hallelujah
It's also true that Sonay seems a rather different sort of spirit to your average player, so maybe Jeremy has actually found someone he gels with

I know, you're right and thanks for being fairer minded than me!

Although I did laugh at Indiana's post smile

Sonay is doing a magnificent job. Burel is playing much better than I expected, so not expecting a win, but Sonay is looking like a top 100 player

Anne said Jeremy is Sonays "case manager" in LTA speak. So I guess that means he's her LTA performance team contact point, rather than necessarily actually active in her coaching.

Burel has gone from playing quite well to playing like, well, me.

5-2*

Sonay's forehand isn't really whipping at the moment but she's overall playing a solid match. Keeping it tidy, patient and well thought through while Burel fluctuates between top 50 and outside the top 500 point to point.

I never knew until listening to the commentary on this match that Julie Pullin was one of Sonay's coaches but it makes sense with them both being from the Brighton area. I remember Julie from her playing days as being something of a female Alex Bogdanovic - left handed and benefitting from numerous Wimbledon MDWCs but without a single win to show for it.

Sonay's at it again 6-3 first set.

To be fair, JB does seem to watch all the British women's matches when possible - and also seen around when they are practising. So he ought to know what's going on even if (IMO) he has an adverse effect on most players.

As a coach, I dont know Bates at all - my knowledge of him stems back to playing Forget at Wimbledon and a great match with Thierry Champion - and I liked his game and style as a player. But I read a lot of the comments on here and so his coaching style must be very different to his playing style; surely, though, if he had nothing to offer, the LTA would have dispensed with him well before now? He must bring something to the table?

Sonay playing solid, but Burel had a real wobble as soon as she got broken and has totally lost her rhythm.
