Week 26 - The Championships, Wimbledon (grass) - women's qualifying

Thanks for all that info CD. I didn't get to watch Hannah today but saw the "more senior" players in action - Marni, Emily (one set), Millie (one set) and all of Katy's match. Others have commented above and there isn't much I can add really.

I wasn't sure who was coaching Katy - there was a guy near the front of the stand that might have been. Her Mum was sat two rows behind me in the stand.

Met up with Steven and had a chat after the matches were over. As he said, the shoes were the standout mark of recognition !

I have loads of photos of the players, including a few of those not playing today. (eg Jay and sister Yasmin). Something to look back on over the next few months.

Great to meet you and get to talk with you a couple of times today. Thanks for recognising me and saying hello, I had no idea it was the shoes that were the dead giveaway in the end biggrin

As you know, I hadn't noticed Katy's coach (I had looked for him but I don't know whether it's still the one I knew a few years ago) but I didn't notice her mum either, which is unforgivable, though in my defence, most of the time I was on the same side as them and at the other end of the court. It looked as if Katie Swan hd been deputised to be surrogate coach when Katy was at the other end of the court, and she wasn't doing too badly at it either! Looking at my video of the non-MP again, I think it was also Katie who was the first to make Katy realise that it hadn't actually been match point.

Of course it's a terrible error, but the match had been going on for three hours, extremely intense, and it's probably almost muscle memory (or whatever the mental equivalent is) that tiebreaks at 6-6 (rather than MTBs in doubles) are first to 7. It wouldn't have helped make her realise her error more quickly that the score was 7-5 rather than, say, 7-4, because her opponent starting moving towards the net. Of course, that was because it was changeover time, not because she thought the match was over - Lukas confirmed with the umpire that it wasn't over once she reached the net. It also didn't help that the crowd reacted as if it really was over or that the cameraman ran on, though I think he realised even later than Katy did!

As to the question about whether the umpire had announced that the final tiebreak was to 10: yes she had, as part of "6-all, tiebreak, mumble mumble mumble", but it was fairly muffled, and people around me were asking each other what the umpire had said. I thought I had just about heard the first to 10 bit, but then wondered if I had mis-remembered that it was first to 10 in qualifying as well as the main draw and thus "heard" what I expected to hear. Indeed, I was only videoing at 6-5 just in case I'd got it wrong and it really was MP after all.

Anyway, I was desperately sorry for Katy, given what she has been through, how much effort she had put into winning three matches to get there in there first place, that she was so close and that she must know that she should have won, and that was even before she showed how much it had got to her. Heartbreaking really. cry

I was very impressed that in between floods of tears, she made the effort to stop to sign balls for her younger fans before hiding her head under a towel and running off. One of the little kids even told her "you're SO good"!

Re. the match in general, I thought Katy was the more accomplished player and, as Paul implied, was making all the running, with more powerful shots and variety, but she was having some trouble on serve (as was Lukas, but her serving reliability seemed to improve after the 1st set, though the stats may prove me wrong about that) and Lukas was boringly just getting everything back and waiting for Katy to make a mistake, a tactic as effective as it was frustrating. That seemed to make Katy rush to finish points, thus playing right into her opponent's hands at times. As part of this attempt to finish points quickly, she was delivering more dodgy drop shots than a teenage Andy Murray (though she did get away with a couple of crucial ones in the 3rd set) and generally over-pushing a bit. I can understand it, Lukas was b****y annoying (and don't get me started on her gratuitous moaning to the umpire about the line judges being too pro-British!), but sadly it didn't help Katy's cause.

Ah, that makes sense. Have she and Holly Hutchinson ever been seen in the same place together? (i.e. looking at images, I can just about understand you confusing them - certainly more resemblance that Emily A and Katie S, thinking about another recent thread wink)

Looking at the second qualifying round matches, Sonay has a real chance against Wei I think - the bookies are making her a 1-4 favourite, which is incredible really - they must think she is certain to win and I guess if she does, that she will probably face Andreeva in the final round on Thursday.

The bookies are also making Day (67- 100) a slight favourite against Marni (11-10) ; with a possible 3rd round against Chloe Paquet, I think Marni has had a really horrible section of the draw, but to beat a player of the calibre of Mladenovic should be a real encouragement and I think she may edge this.

The bookies also have Hannah (163-100) as an underdog against Fruhvirtova (11-25) - it should be a great learning experience for Hannah and glad that they have put her and Marni on the main show court, though tough on Sonay to miss out, particularly as she is the most likely winner tomorrow.

Anyway I am sure I echo everyone on here in wishing all three the best of luck tomorrow - I think all 3 matches could go either way - hopefully a noisy crowd and home advantage will make the difference.

I was courtside for Hannah's match (in davis cup t-shirt) and echo some people's thoughts on her performance. Thought she played an excellent match and mixed up her shots well and knew exactly when to attack. Was right near her coach/es and was interesting to hear their comments. I think at one point they said serve out wide on the ad side and gave some good tactical advice at key moments. Loved her celebration at the end too and good crowd/atmosphere on a smaller court. Really impressive win!

Thanks, didn't hear that. Confirms my thoughts even more.

I think one of Hannah's sisters watched Mika's match, and said it was weird that Mika's team were SO quiet - her parents were cheering, but the actual team were almost silent - and Mika REALLY needed some proper coaching - it would have made the world of difference

Not sure about Mimi - it was on the big court - but, again, I didn't hear any real coaching

Overall, there were ups and downs yesterday

Katy, Emily and Millie came very close to winning - in that order

But Marni came pretty close to losing and Sonay only won her TB by the skin of her teeth and would have been in a third. So that was positive.

Also, in terms of chokes, or playing poorly at key times, or whatever, it's always good to see a lot of other matches too. There's a tendency to feel it's just Britihs players, simply because we focus on British players

For instance, I watched from mid-third set of Bassols Ribera v Yang - and it was Yang's match 100% - but from being completely in charge, she just gift wrapped the match and handed it to the Spaniard on a plate

(Pacquet's match was a nightmare too)

However, unlike nearly all other events, you know that a win (or more) here, with the points, the money, the confidence, and the recognition, can really be a life-changer. And so it's a shame when someone you support passes so close but no cigar.....

Thanks Steven. Nothing much to add to the many comments re: Katys match. An absolute heartbreaker, tennis can be a cruel sport. Like others I was so chuffed to see her come through the play offs and yesterdays match is no doubt going to hurt for a long time. Hopefully she takes a breather for a couple weeks and channels her energy into a strong second half to her season (easier said than done, I know).

Well, Emily Appleton beat Linda F easily at Surbiton - so why not Hannah ? smile

I think Sonay's match being on court 1 is rather a reflection of her opponent's lack of public profile

Linda F was obviously top-50, as an 18 year-old or whatever

And Kayla Day is seeded, and there's lots of American support

So it sort of makes sense to put those two of the women's matches on Centre
