Week 26 - The Championships, Wimbledon (grass) - men's qualifying

Just as in set 2 George had a breakpoint at 4-4 snuffed out with an ace. This time he held for 5-5 and Travaglia, missing a lot of first serves was unable to convert 6 game points, before George took his one breakpoint with a delicate drop shot. So George will serve for it at 6*-5

QR2:  Quentin Halys (FRA) WR 223 (CH = 61 in January last year) vs (qWC) Jay Clarke WR 322

So the bookies were right & George somehow makes it two out of eight Brits into QR2:

QR1:  (qWC) George Loffhagen WR 754 defeated Stefano Travaglia (ITA) WR 209 by 6-4 4-6 7-5  biggrin

He was *3-2 early in the decider, too.

QR2:  (q5) Lloyd Harris (RSA) WR 91 (CH = 31 in September 2021) vs (qWC) George Loffhagen WR 754

df, 2 aces, service winner, fh error and a dodgy drop shot winner - and George is through 6-4 4-6 7-5 in front of a whooping crowd

Super result - was not easy to get through that third set

That might be just the sort of result George needs to get going again :)

Well done, George! Tough next match, but at least he has the opportunity to play it

And well done too to Jay

But all our players were well under-ranked.
And all were outsiders at the bookies (apart from George)
So you've got to 'expect' them all to lose
And simply take pleasure in the odd win here or there

The only one, to me, which was 100% one-sided was Jack PJ's match (and where the odds were truly mad - I put a huge bet (for me) on Lucas, it made no sense at all)

The bookies odds implied just under three winners but I think two isn't bad under the circumstances - not least because, like CD, I didn't understand the odds for JPJ v Pouille either.

W 66% Loffhagen
L 43% Pinnington Jones
W 40% Clarke
L 40% Peniston
L 31% Matusevich
L 28% Gill
L 26% Parker
L 19% Crawford

E(GB QR1 wins) = 2.93 - Actual 2

Cracking win for George.

Bit disappointed, hope we would have hand a couple more through.

I remember when Halys was a talented junior and considered the next Big Thing in French tennis, but it never really happened for him. (He's 27 now. Where does the time go?) So I feel Jay has a decent chance in the next round.

If I've counted correctly, Halys was one of 23 Frenchmen in QR1.  Eleven survived, three of them courtesy of encounters with compatriots, & there is one all-French affair (involving the q1, Mpetshi Perricard, & Antoine Escoffier) in QR2.  Let's hope Jay does get the better of him.

As for where the time goes, it just melts away...  hmm

Thanks for adding them up. I was meaning to do so. As yesterday when I was there every court I looked at seemed to have a Frenchman playing on it! 18% of the draw or something like that!

25 French men in the Top 200 (1 in 8), but only one in the Top 20. Even when they had Tsonga, Simon, Monfils and Gasquet, I remember French fans saying, but you have Murray. Quality or quantity?
