Week 25 - ITF W100 - Ilkley, Great Britain (grass)

Golly Moses

What a third set from Ella

It's true that Hartono played some weird tennis at times - there was one truly awful game, out of nowhere, she'd been playing well, and seemed to get down on herself, suddenly

But Ella was great - really kept steady - trying to keep the balance between attack and defence (as opposed to get pushed into chips and loopy balls) and kept the serve going which was critical

Great win !!!!

Well done Ella! It's one thing to pull off these wins when you are playing quite well and building, it's another to end a very tough run with this.

I don't think missing the playoffs is an issue because she would have been one of the last direct entrants and, I think for most people, very unlikely to make it through. Getting the wins and points here is far more beneficial I feel.

And Ranah nips the second set too!

That's a massive win for Ella, taking out her career best win by a mile (previously WR308)

Some nice uptick in form from Ella after her first 15k win, nice to see and long may it continue!

Great to see and glad she goes further here - but don't you think she would have stood a decent chance of doing some damage at the WC Play Offs on the grass form she is on? Guess we wont know now, but still...

Well, she could take the money and run

She could withdraw now and bank the points, and leg it down to London

But I doubt she will

I guess it's all about risk-reward

This is guaranteed money, and points, at W100 level

At the playoffs, she could come up against Millie in R1 and lose and end up with nothing

Stay with it Ella !
$1,559 and 27 points earned so far, with a further $814 and 9 points for the next round. Much better than the tiny amounts for W15 and W35 tournaments

Just noticed that Given Roach is in the draw here, in doubles

But also in the draw at the Frinton BT event

Something not right....

If she was in Frinton, she must have pulled out as she is no longer there!

Agreed, I would stick with it, just musing really on what she could have done...

Jeezo Ranah...

3 match points at 5-2*

1 at *5-3

30-0* at 5-4*...

Behind in the breaker, the up 6-3* in the breaker. Plays two pat pat rallies to miss the first two on return, then finally wins.

Got there! Well done kid.

Well closed out by Ranah in the end - big serve and backhand on her third match point.

Gosh, that was classic Ranah ..... :(

Half kills you

But very very glad she got over the line in the end

She was wobbly in that second set but deserved the third (until she went a little AWOL when it mattered

And credit to young Renata who tightened it up and made herself hard to beat

Of course, both Ranah and Ella could sign into WC play-offs, before 6 pm, by phone, and then leg it down to London, for tomorrow

I doubt they will but, with phone sign in option, it's always possible......
