Week 25 - ITF W100 - Ilkley, Great Britain (grass)

It's good to be disappointed as it shows how our expectations have risen thanks to a series of good performances.

The only disappointment for me was Lily. I think she definitely deserves her wild card due to her performances over 12 months, but she is struggling for form and can't see her being that competitive at Wimbledon.

Womens final will be Jessika Ponchet WR 143 versus Rebecca Marino WR 144 - that could be a close one!

Could well be the final Wimbledon wildcard on the line?

Theyve taken the mens option on that away as Charlie has got the final one; if it is on the line, that would be great to watch, adds some tension/spice to proceedings!

I cant recall if Bjorklund got one last season, I think she did?

Looking forward to being at the matches also!

Nope I dont think Wickmayer (who won Surbiton) or Bjorklund (Ilkley) got WCs last year.

It's not - Banks is playing Eastbourne so must have had her wildcard upgraded. So that solves that mystery!

How come there are 5 wild cards at Eastbourne?

Because Marni has a wildcard into Wimbledon qualies so shouldn't be in Eastbourne

The LTA have now updated it to Harriet and Lily with the MD WC in addition to Emma.

CD - thanks for the really interesting write up on Mayot in the mens; its a French day at Ilkley - any similar insights on Ponchet? Reading this thread, her game style seems awkward? Is she like a Nicelescu style player, chopping and slicing her forehands etc?

Enjoyed the womens final here today - I like Ponchets game, what she lacked in power she made up for with variety, a nice single handed backhand and good drop shots. Marino out powered her in the end .

What struck me at the end was how nice both girls really are, Marino was very open about her mental health problems that caused her to take 5 years out and she also commented how it was apt to play the final versus one of her best friends on tour.
