Mertens retires at 3-6 0-3 which leaves Katie secure at WR32
Does that mean she'd play Iga in R3?
No, she would play any one of the top eight seeds depending on the draw. There is a set procedure for placing the seeds in the draw as set out in the Grand Slam Rulebook

Thanks, I assumed if matches went with seeding no.1 played no.32 in R3, no.16 in R4, no.8 in QF, no.4 in SF and no.2 in the final.

It is seeding blocks, with an element of randomness, as in ATP and WTA tour and ITFs.
For Slams, #1 seed is placed at the top, #2 seed is placed at the bottom, then seeds 3 & 4 go randomly to the 2 halves.
For the QF, seeds 5 to 8 are randomly bracketed with any of seeds 1 to 4.
For the L16, seeds 9 to 12 are bracketed with seeds 5 to 8 and seeds 13 to 16 bracketed with seeds 1 to 4.
For the L32, seeds 17 to 24 are bracketed with seeds 9 to 16 and seeds 25 to 32 bracketed with seeds 1 to 8.

I don't know the rules so genuine question.
Muchova is set to return after a long lay off. Although she still qualifies for the tournament as of right is she not entitled to use her protected ranking, which would have been a seed thus demoting Katie by 1 more place?

I thought you could use a protected ranking to enter a tournament but not for seeding. But could be wrong.
Thanks. That seems pretty tough if so.
The above is correct for a Grand Slam. For WTA tournaments (except draws of 48 and 96), a player with a top 100 protected ranking who would be a seed with the protected ranking will be an additional seed. This doesn't displace anyone that is a seed on their normal ranking. The additional seed will be placed in the draw so they don't play a seeded player in the 1st round.
