Week 25 - ATP 500 - cinch Championships - The Queen's Club, London Great Britain (grass)

Just been reading back through the thread of the first time I saw Billy. Crazy to think he was outside the Top 1000 at the time and playing a young Alex de Minaur in a futures event. That was 8 years ago in Murcia. I came across this sentence:

"I am not saying that he could cruise up to the Top 100, but given two or three years with the right support and in the right environment, who knows."

There's still time Billy.

There certainly is, Bob. He seems to grow in stature each event and really is a story we should celebrate. I was just checking and he hasnt featured to any extent in player of the month votes this season; and so isnt yet in place of the season field. Albeit we are only halfway through the year, it seems strange. For me he is certainly one of the players of the season so far. Maybe the June Pom vote will see both those things right.

Andy back on tomorrow on centre - he is 2-0 v Thompson both on grass, a tiebreak first set followed by a straight sets win. Be lovely to repeat that this week!

Edit - quite rightly this piece of research was shown to be a load of old bunkum!!

I guess the problem is you normally need to win things or be consistent through a month by doing back to back long runs to be in the minds of people for a vote. He has played a lot of tournaments, which he always does, however at challenger level hes been knocked out Round 1 almost as many times as he has progressed. He managed two QFs back to back in February and then his best is the back to back SFs on grass In terms of runs. Just hope he manages to win a challenger soon. One before the US Open wouldnt go  amiss would probably put him in a seeding position.

Agree that it's been a year of consistent improvement rather than anything spectacular.  Hence the lack of success in the PoM votes as that usually requires a real stand out moment to have an impact.

You are correct of course - I think the fact he has always been doing well-ish and rising continuously up the rankings has made me feel like it has been a great year to date, but , until now, no stand out moments. Feels like this month is turning out to be his month.

Shame Jake and Charlie had to spoil his fun in Nottingham last week but it shows how competitive mens tennis is

Just hope Billy can continue this form throughought the rest of the season unlike Ryan and jan who wasted the good progress they made and didnt push into the top 100

Wow that's harsh especially to Ryan who got injured. Not sure about Jan but he had a huge loss of form much like Cam is.

That is harsh - as Blue Belle says, re Ryan. Jan is still mid 100s, Im not convinced he ever had the talent to be a top 100 player so not sure hes wasted anything, I think hes done just fine.

Not sure where you are getting that from?

Thompson beat Andy at Queens in 2017, so h2h is 1-1

you're right - I quickly read it on Tennis Abstract and got it the wrong way round; 1 all it is. But Andy won last year at Surbiton and 2017 is ancient history!

Not sure it is harsh on Ryan as after Eastbourne he never made it past the second round at any event and then got injured, may be remembering when he got injured wrong though
