Week 24 - WTA250 - Nottingham, Great Britain Grass

I really didn't know who I wanted to win before this match, but Harriet's behaviour, despite some excellent play, makes it almost impossible to want her to win.

Yeah the umpire has been pretty poor throughout this and Harriet probably, with some justification, feels she's had the rougher end of several bad decisions.

You don't get to talk to people like they're subhuman when you disagree with them. None of the rest of us do in our jobs. I'm afraid it's upper-middle-class entitlement writ large.

Because absolutely no working class sportsperson ever talks to referees as though they are subhuman.

The umpire is acting childlishly too

Having umpired some top-200 player matches (well, only two , but a quite a few top-500 ones), she shouldn't be arguing the toss with Harriet, and talking to her like a naughty schoolgirl, or like her mother

You're taught to rise above it, let the player vent (assuming they're not going too far), not to get caught in nit-picking nonsense of going all over it again

It's daft that she's trying to tell Harriet the paint they use has changed

This is not the time or the place

Just pay attention and do your job properly

Are there not personal issues- or at least a history of this- in matches between Dart and Boulter? That is probably driving Dart's reactions in my opinion.

And the umpire doesn't get to talk to people she disagress with like they're naughty 5 year-olds either

(I agree that it's difficult to 'warm' to Harriet, and she does have a rather cold, spiky aura, but the umpire is well out of order here, IMO)

Yes, I am saying that Harriet's own brand of behaviour seems to be derived from entitlement. Other brands are available, with different derivations.

Particularly nasty to be rude to people who cannot answer back.  She was clearly not brought up to have good manners.  Nothing to do with class and entitlement, just bad parenting.

Of Harriet? Or of the umpire? Or both?

That's the problem - the umpire HAS been answering back - quite inappropriately too

I'm not defending Harriet completely - she does have a difficult manner - as mentioned above

But the umpire has not been doing her job properly - and she should

Maybe we should get back to tennis; apologies for the deviation, should have kept quiet. It's great to see Harriet playing well irrespective!

Katie looking fairly safe now.

My last comment on this is that it's possible for a player to be acting like a brat and for the umpire to be wrong and/or handling a situation badly. I think that's what's happened here.

Have to hope if Harriet at least can keep the high level she has shown at many points today the wins will come eventually.

It is odd to me she doesn't have a coach in her corner, just her boyfriend (who is not a hitting partner or coach). Who is she working with just now normally?

Got to say, that smile of Heathers never fails to make me grin. Lovely girl and so pleased for her given what was at stake today.

So happy for Heather. And most importantly she retains a Top 200 ranking for the time being. Quite a pivotal few weeks for her.

Yes whoops. Sorry Katie...

Suspect Lily would like the two individual break points she had at 4-4* back... 4-6 *0-1

Emily a break down. Hopefully she settles down as I really hoped she could push Birrell.
