Ive mentioned it before, but her dad , Mike, was a sort of player I looked up to when young. He won the Ilkley event a couple of times and played doubles sometimes with my coach, Simon Ickringill. I loved Mikes attacking game style

Ah, I didn't know she was Mike Appleton's daughter. As well as having a decent domestic career, he was responsible for the implementation of the Volkswagen Ratings Scheme (equivalent of a tennis handicap) which was already being used in France and allowed players of all levels (beginners to pros) to play the same event through a series of sequential draws. These events ran through 80s and 90s. Now replaced by World Tennis Number.

Big ranking rise on the way for Emily - around 44 places from last week and another 20 from this tournament (and counting !)

Yes re last week. For this week though, Emily also qualified here last year before losing to Katie B in R1, so has so far just covered last year's points.

At least still going to be a new CH on Monday, being live #355 as against her CH 368 from last October. Will be up to GB #11

Id say as many as 4 of those could end up with British winners.

Surely another Brit will finally beat Fruhvirtova.

And Evo and Jubby follow Heather and the Katie / Harriet match .

Plus the men who get into FQR on the other courts. Lots of British interest for anyone going.

The sooner we forget that first set from Heather the better. Day has a big first serve and is coached by the son of Pat Cash, for those interested.

Heather has settled a bit and is 3-0 up in the second.

I thought she was coached by Pat himself - he was with her at Surbiton

Perhaps it's a family affair, I was just going off what the commentator was saying.
