Oh dear just in time to see Katy get beaten. She was clearing injured as she served underarm or the last few points. Can't see her her getting a QWC now. Such a shame
I wonder if we are nearing the end for Katy. I hope not but she been injured for a while and has issues with her shoulder again. Cant help but think she is one serious injury away from calling it a day
It was actually quite impressive how Marni managed to lose the 4-4* game in the final set from 40-0* up. Some staggeringly bad decision making and shot execution.
Bit frustrated with Millie, she had that match. It wasn't really a case of a hard fought encounter where she just came up short.
Super from Emily and Naiktha solid as a rock again. Beth started well but Eala now running away with it.
Sad to see Katy struggling after a good week, hope she's ok
100%
SUCH bad matchplay by Marni - really defied belief
And, yes, that was Millie's match - Linda F was there for the taking, no question
I was at Nottingham today and I was really disappointed with Marni.
I wasnt expecting her to do that well seeing as this was her first match on grass however her tennis level was fantastic at times.
She threw away the first set by not serving well but she still had opportunities to take the first set but more interesting was when she was 30-0 up at 4-4 in the 3rd set.
She looked like she relaxed and played a poor point where the Italian missed an easy volley by about 2 inches and Marni looked across to her coach and smiled as she was then 40-0 up.
For the next few points Marni looked far too relaxed and did not put the intensity in to give herself a chance of winning anymore points and threw away the set/match.
I have seen this happen with her before, but hopefully big lessons have been learned today.
I this sport, its never over until its over.
Interesting, Deucebag
That's exactly how it came across on livestream - but interesting to have it confirmed live
I remember one French coach who, at key moments, used to try and drill a sort of 'think like you're a solider, your life depends on this, you MUST move, set, hit, or the war will be lost'
It might not be everyone's cup of tea - and he was coaching boys/young men so, at the risk of being sexist, maybe it suited them more - but it really did work - there was just an added focus, an added seriousness, right at key times - whereas Marni seemed to have exactly the opposite - a sloppiness that was completely unnecessary and highly frustrating
As with anything and anyone, it's all a question of finding what works but this is a really common theme in Marni's matches and it doesn't seem to be getting any better
Youre right CD maybe with some consistent tournaments without injury it may help her in this department who knows. Ive seen the Italian girl play a few times before and she gets a lot of ball back at a very good pace. She also played very well today but Marni at her best was better but she didnt maintain her best for long enough.
I like the strategy from the French coach.
Would it be anyone who we would know?
No, just a normal regional level coach, who trained the top group of regional players age 13-19
But it's very interesting
Again, aimed at younger players but surprisingly effective, I remember the regional sports psych. trainer for the 9-13 year olds telling them all to think of themselves as balloons before they went on court. They had to be beautiful, round, properly blown up balloons. Not floppy, half-deflated balloons. And NOT balloons SO full of air they were about to pop. Just lovely firm perfect balloons.
One of the boys who went on to be an ATP player said years later, that he still thought of that sometimes, when he got a bit overexcited before an important match, not to be TOO blown up so he might pop, just a perfect balloon

I'm pretty sure she was close to retiring in the last year or so because of all the injuries she's been having? Clearly, the shoulder seems like it isn't going to allow her to play fully (like Laura's hip)
Full singles draw before final qualifiers taken from the TF message board so may change. Really this is a pretty weak 250 and I'd be disappointed not to get at least one GB semi-finalist from this. The second section is very weak. Any decent qualifier would fancy their chances of coming through that mini section. Wide open. Jabeur will start favourite I guess but she's been terrible at times this year. Same too with Kostyuk. Depends what sate of mind she is in. Katie Boulter should go far in this. Will be interesting to see how sharp Emma will be after another fairly lengthy spell with no matches.

Would have been a good opportunity for of our youngsters to pick up some valuable WTA points.
None of the youngsters would have got in as of right
And the wildcards in both draws have all gone to GB players (bar one)
So if they gave wildcards to youngsters, that would have been at the expense of other GB players
Realise some of the topjuniors are pretty tied up with exams etc, but are the rest we are supporting here ever going to get to the top 100? I suppose its a bit of frustration and I hope they do..Im just a bit worried the youngsters start to feel the a bit disenfranchised and look elsewhere.

I don't think there's any point in giving Mimi/Hannah etc wildcards here when - three days ago - they were playing on clay
You need a good week or more to adjust
And the lower down juniors aren't ready to play WTA
there's no point giving Hannah Read, or Hollie Smart, or whoever a wildcard here - it's not where they're at
So I don't quite know which juniors you mean
was thinking Mimi, Mika and Hannah. I dont think the others are anywhere near ready yet. I know Hannah did a small piece talking about her wish to emulate Mirra and how she is her inspiration, Personally I think that might be a hard act to follow.

I can't believe that those three are at risk of feeling disenfranchised
Or worried about not getting near the top 100
All three are 100% in the system, doing very well, getting every help possible
But it's not right to try and bounce up to WTA tennis on a completely different surface if you haven't had a decent time to get accustomed to it
NB And Hannah would do herself a favour to find a different role model

As well as CD's points, it should also be remembered that Mimi, Hannah and Mika are restricted by the Age Eligibility Rules on the number of tournaments they can play and wild cards they can take. They have to be smart about what tournaments they choose to play and where they take WCs. There are other tournaments where they would make better use of the WCs while balancing that with development opportunities and the risk of losing in the opening round.
