I've always had the impression that in all the circumstances Emma tries and is encouraged to take a pretty rounded view on life with many other interests
Brilliant!!! I had to go out part way through the second set. I wonder when we last had a British WTA winner and British ATP winner on the same day!!!!
The answer appears to be 18 April 1971 (Roger Taylor and Ann Jones).
This was a great find by 9vicman - Stu at the Times and I had been searching and I'd only managed to check that this hadn't happened in the 51 years since the WTA came into being, then found wins for Taylor and Wade in 1972 that turned out to be the same weekend but not the same day, and arguable whether they both counted as main tour anyway - what counts as main tour was a lot more vague pre-1973, but the 1971 wins 9vicman found were very clearly both at top-level events.
Anyway, after 9vicman had tweeted this to me, I DMd Stu:
... but still he credited me in his tweet advertising his article today. I quote-tweeted that giving the credit to 9VicMan but sadly only my followers will have seen that and not all of Stu's.
Anyway, I just wanted to thank 9VicMan again here and clear up the above so you don't think I set out to take the credit myself for a stat someone else had found, not least because this happens to me on a regular basis, so I'm well aware that it can be quite irritating!
Stu's actual article is excellent though - exactly the kind of positive things the BBC should have reported on the 10 o'clock news on Sunday evening after such a successful day instead of lazily mentioning only the Olympic 'news' about Andy and Emma, which is what they actually did.
