Week 24 - WTA250 - Nottingham, Great Britain Grass

Yes she was laughing when she was saying that, she was just being jovial

Really glad to hear that was a joke. On reflection Katie is way too intelligent and savvy to be saying anything like that seriously, so great that it was in jest.

No Alex didn't fly over afterhis win. This is what Katie said about him:-

"My boyfriend didn't make the trip even though I thought he might after his win in Hertogenbosch but yeah we'll have to be talking about that tonight and see if we're going to be still together, I don't know, but I hope he's going to be listening to this because we've got some talking to do!"

I think that was a great win for Katie. She is playing so consistently now and genuinely looks a top 32 player now - hope she can make the jump to the top 16 and have a really successful Wimbledon. I agree with others about her skipping Birmingham - I think she should look at playing one of Birmingham or Eastbourne and give her self some rest.

This quote though alarms me. The worst thing anyone in the public eye can do is make quotes to journalists about the status of their private lives - if she wants a relationship with Alex to work, then better to communicate it with him privately, rather than doing it through the media. Who knows what has happened to them, but talking in public like this is unlikely to help matters.

Anyway a great tournament for Katie and good news that Emma gave her such a hard fought match yesterday and today - bodes well for both of them for the rest of the year and Wimbledon in particular. Hope  as well that Fran's shoulder injury isn't serious.

I didn't actually hear her say all that - it was quoted on the BBC sports pages. I'm sure it was all said in jest as a reference to when they both won titles at the same time at the end of February when he did jump on a plane.

Given there were just a few hours between the matches and no flights to East Midlands Airport from Amsterdam I don't think there was any chance of him making it back in time.

Was a bit disappointed Emma didn't win the SF but i'm not sure she would have had enough in the tank to beat Pliskova so it worked out best for everyone. Would be surprised to see Katie in Birmingham this week though.

Very late to the party but great tennis from Katie (and Alex)

Just goes to show how much of a disservice Harriet would have done to this country if she had beaten Katie in round one, given she would doubtless have frittered away the opportunity to progress deep.

Reminds me of when Kyle beat Evo at Eastbourne despite Evo having a great shot at taking the title given his grass court level back then.

Predictably Kyle proceeded to scuttle out the singles draw asap thereafter.

Looks like everything is good between Katie and Emma after all.

I actually think it is healthy to have a little bit of  needle between players as long as they respect each other. It would be good to have a serious rivalry at the top of GB women's tennis.

There is 6 years in age between Katie and Emma. Im sure they get on fine but Katie was playing professionally when Emma was doing her GCSEs!

It's also good for players to be disappointed that they've lost. I thought Emma was perfectly respectful, and she has never come across as someone who is overtly 'huggie' (no idea how to spell that, if it's even a word). Obviously it was such a wonderful moment in 2023 between Jodie and Katie, but it was a much bigger moment, and a one-sided final. No drama here.

Good point

They won't have been on any of the same training camps, or have had wildcards into Wimbly qualis at the same time, I don't even know if Katie uses the NTC as her base (I've never seen her there when I've been for other things whereas Heather, say, is often there)

i.e. they may well barely know each other really, it's a big age gap

(Not to mention, why on earth should they be mates, just because they both play tennis and play for the same country?)

At the Roehampton tournament last summer Katie, Harriet and Heather were all there training on the day I went. Emma was of course recovering from surgery at the time.

 Exactly

Given her sudden rise, and then all her injuries, she's hardly had any time to cross over with any of the others

I saw Emma there as well - she was practising with children's size balls I think I heard someone say. But possibly because of the fanfare she got from an early age she was much more surrounded by her team espectially her dad who seemed a bit like a bodyguard. The other players were hanging out more chatting and seemed more relaxed. I guess it's hard when you're a business, a bit of a commodity, as well as a sporting person to develop normal friendships. Katie, Heather and Harriet don't tend to get the media coverage that Emma gets whatever she does, whether she's winning, losing, injured, doing promo stuff. I think I'd be a bit more wary of everyone outside of my immediate circle. However she never seems rude or acts out so that's fair enough.

Well Emma seemed to have a lovely day in Oxford yesterday. Think she was picking her college if anything goes awry!

I'm glad to see she is having a bit of normality. I'm not saying she doesn't have a nice time, just that her life isn't exactly normal a lot of the time!
