Incredible! To defend a title, with all the pressure it brings, and with all the delays during the week. Hugely impressive. Yes it's not the strongest 250, but you can only beat who is in front of you and her final two matches against Emma and Pliskova were excellent and quite a bit above the levels she was facing to win last year.
I wonder if she will skip Birmingham now. She must be exhausted after this week plus not feeling well, however she may want to play to secure a seeding at Wimbledon

I was just thinking the same thing. I think she would be sensible to skip Birmingham and have a rest, and then play Eastbourne and Wimbledon.

I dont think Katie Fran or Emma have been well this week. Wouldnt be surprised if Katie took some r and r.
Excellent work! Must be a long time since a British woman defended a WTA title...
Have done a little research on this. Virginia Wade won Tokyo in 1977 and 1978 (though a little doubt whether the 1977 event was an official event). Otherwise Wade won Bournemouth in 1973 and 1974. So 50 years.
Brilliant!!! I had to go out part way through the second set.
I wonder when we last had a British WTA winner and British ATP winner on the same day!!!!
OMG, I had to break off in the early stages of the decider. Absolutely brilliant. Well done katie. Did Alex fly over for the final does anyone know? they both won today. Fantastic.
(I was rooting for Emma in the Semi's but I note Emma actually won a few more games than Pliskova did so she shouldn't feel too bad.)
