Roland Garros qualies

As seagull said in the "Happy birthday Boggo" thread, the qualies draw is being made tonight and Alex should be 19th seed.

Arvind Parmar is also playing and hoping for his 3rd pro win on clay.

Martin Lee is too far down the alternates list to have a chance of getting in, he's still 18th.

Those draws could be a lot worse!!

Arthurs must have a similar record to Arvs on clay

Alex will have it tough but has to step up to the mark!

Arvind is cruising at the moment, he's won the first set 6-2, and is serving at 0-1 in the 2nd set

Stats so far:

1st serve: Parmar: 59%, Arthurs: 62%

Aces: Parmar: 2, Arthurs: 5

The key stat: unforced errors: Parmar: 5, Arthurs: 18 [!!!!]

Parmar is winning 77% of points on 1st serve and 78% on 2nd serve.

He's hit 9 winners compared to 15 from Arthurs

Parmar has had 7 bp chances and has taken 2.

18 unforced errors in 9 games is a lot, basically Arvind is keeping it consistent at the moment and Arthurs is self-destructing. He must be serving very well as Arthurs is having little impact on 1st or 2nd serve

Some stats:

As johnnylad said, this was a really good draw for Arvind compared to some others which he could have had, Arthurs has a career high of 33 but since winning his 1st ATP title last spring, he's slipped a long way down to 209.

They've played 3 times before, all 3 matches have been on grass. Arthurs leads 3-0 in the head-to-heads, winning 7-5, 6-2 in rd1 of Queens 1999, 6-3, 6-4 in rd1 of Surbiton 2000, and winning 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 in the quarters of ATP Nottingham 2002.

In those matches, Arvind was eventually outpowered due to the firepower of Arthurs serve and the Aussie's excellent net game. Arthurs chip-charged on every Parmar 2nd serve and it eventually paid off.

It'd be interesting to see what his tactics are today on the slow clay where the serves of both players will be nullified.

Meanwhile, Arvind has held easily for 2-2. Arthurs is 15-0 up on his serve

Arthurs holds to love for 3-2. Arvind has made little impact on the Arthurs serve so far in this set.

Looking at Arthurs' clay record, it's not actually particularly that bad especially compared to Rusedski's clay-court record. Like Greg, Arthurs will avoid the clay if he can but he's reached the 3rd round of hamburg and Monte Carlo since 2004, he reached the quarters of Houston a few years back and also beat Roddick in rd1 of the French.
