I havent been following the ladies French this past event much, quite gobsmacked to see 28 year old Jasmine Paolini in the semis of singles and doubles. Unusual to see someone breakthrough at this age, alongside Danielle Collins who is having a career year at age 30 ( and retiring at the end of it!).
What is the story!?
Also Gauff is in both semis and Andreeva might well have been!

Paolini comfortably beat the 17yr-old Russian 6-3, 6-1. Perhaps the occasion was too much for the youngster. However, Paolini on clay is a handful, and coincidentally narrowly lost to Andreeva a month ago on clay in the Madrid Open. Paolini had a big payday winning Dubai on hard court in Feb 2024, and before that had won the Florence W125k in May2023 on home soil. Who was it that gave Paolini the biggest fright in that tournament? None other than GB's Katie Swan losing 7-9 in a 3rd set tie break, on clay, after 3 evenly contested sets.
I still remember Jasmine narrowly beating Eden Silva at Wimbly qualis (Eden basically had that match on her racket but, as per normal, couldn't quite put it to bed :( )

Thank you - and what has made the difference for her to come through at this late age? She really is a new name to me, so presume her rise is in the past year ?
Jasmine first broke into the top 100 in 2019, the top 50 in 2021 and the top 30 in 2023, so it has been a steady rise. I don't know what has made the difference though, could be one of several things but her speed around the court and defensive stills stand out for me.

Still surprising given how short she is. Didn't see it coming after Katie Boulter beat her comfortably in straight sets in Linz at the end of January.

Paolini has been at Ilkley on at least one occasion that I can remember. I didnt choose to watch her as quite frankly there is no shortage of clay courters to watch hilariously trying to find their feet at the start of the grass season.
