Only the looney left could sabotage a thread about wild cards and turn it into an issue of race. Where on earth do you people get off? You just seem intent on causing division.
We are in 2024 and one's race or heritage is completely irrelevant as to whether they will succeed in tennis or not. Financial backing may, but I suppose you will say that certain people from certain backgrounds are financially disadvantaged because of who they are which is absolute nonsense, the sort of propaganda spread by the BBC.
Let's get back to the tennis shall we. The cream will rise to the top regardless of the colour of their skin.

I don't know what world you live in but it's not the same as mine

(And I've sat in actual federation meetings that can tell you this is most definitely not true in tennis either - and this is further down the line than where it has the biggest impact anyway)

Indeed, I sort of wonder if you're deiberately saying this tongue in cheek, just to get a rise ? smile

But it's true that it could probably have a thread of its own - however, when a thread is no longer hugely active (because we know who the wildcards are now) then there's no harm if if goes off on a different path

There was certainly nothing tongue in cheek whatsoever in what I wrote or was I saying this to get a rise, even though those on the political left get triggered at the slightest thing, heaven forbid you should challenge the ideology with facts or logic.

As for the world I live in, I live in the real one, not the leftist world of woke which is having a pernicious effect on society and exists to divide, put people into boxes and constantly invent problems and issues where there are none.  In terms of being disadvantaged, white working class boys are now bottom of the pile, they are the lowest achievers.
I won't apologise for any of the facts in my two posts  to those of you who exist in a post truth world.

Let the tennis begin.

Whew, these daily mail buzz words! 10/10 for performance art!

(I actually do think class remains the biggest barrier to people playing tennis but to dismiss race as irrelevant feels like something youd have to ask Jubb about and see if he agrees I guess?!)

Lets get onto more woke issues- where are the GAY MALE tennis players? GB or abroad- all thoughts and takes are welcome!

Never imagined such a fuss would emanate from my post which was based around how pleased I was Paul received a wild card. You have to be in it to win it...

.and call me a sentimental old fool (rather than a looney lefty hmm ), but I dont believe anyone can fail to be moved by Pauls story. Or fail to understand that race, heritage, socio eco background can have an impact on tennis success. Bottom line, tennis and travel are expensive and being different is hard especially for a child.

I like facts.  Its not hard to find research papers on the impact of sociology economic factors on the likelihood of succeeding at tennis (a couple of links to examples below)

Hear, hear. And if you are a 'sentimental old fool' then there should be more of them. Recognising someone's achievements against difficult odds is hardly extremist or divisive, if anything the opposite! It's one thing bringing the political into sport, we can hardly avoid it, but it doesn't mean we have to bring the party political into it.

I haven't read this thread since I last posted so I don't know exactly what the controversy being talked about above was, but I have to admit that I too was a bit surprised that Paul got a main draw wild card above Charlie (I realise Charlie has since got one too!), but even more pleasantly surprised that Paul has been more than justifying it since he got it! :)

Does that mean Andy thinks he is fit for doubles play at least - or were they forced to take it at this point?
