It's a real shame that Ben Jones and Josh Paris, both ranked in the Top 200, haven't got a wild card.

Neither have the Murray brothers...

There is still one Doubles WC left to go. So that could easily go to the Murrays although might be Jamie and someone else if Andy is not fit. Would be interesting to see if they let Jamie pick a non Brit.

Also Henry Searle might be looking for another partner Id Dan is not fit. So Ben or Josh would surely be in the frame if that was the case.

 Or Jamie and Henry?!

An additional Doubles WC has gone to Kyle Edmund & Oliver Crawford. Bit of a strange one if you ask me.

 That's hilarious - but great !

Have to agree that it is a strange one but at least it allays my fears over Kyle being injured again.

Liam has made the 3rd round the past two years at Wimbledon, he also broke the top 100 and might've stayed in there had it not been for many injuries. He seems to have worked very hard to achieve what he has and seems like an all-round nice guy, so I don't agree with the comments against his WC.

Paul Jubb surprised me, I like him and his story. But I do feel this WC might've better been served as a QWC, and I would've bumped Charlie Broom up to the MD. He beat 2 top 100 players last week, Evans and Harris - plus beat another MDWC in Billy Harris.

Not sure I'd have given Henry one either, don't think he's at this level yet. But then again, I remember Robson got one for winning the juniors, and promising juniors like Edmund and Noami Cavaday getting MDWCs mostly based on their junior performances. But this seems to be a lot more rare nowadays from the AELTC.

Great Charlie has a MD WC - allegedly his friends and supporters are delighted. Nice article below.

Over a decade ago was chatting to to coach Jamie, who wasnot a massive fan of the LTA system - he really wanted a black kid from a housing estate to win Wimbledon. Ive always hoped Paul would be *that kid*

I actually find that a bit pathetic but i guess a 'black' kid from a housing estate would be a bigger story than a white kid from exactly the same background, and what about someone of Indian or Pakistani heritage. I mean if we really want to talk about under representation, that's actually where it is.

Does that really matter, you know the point the poster is making? Im sure it would cover part of that as well. The original post is to highlight the obstacles working class minority backgrounds have in such a sport that caters mainly for the middle classesin the UK.

Only the looney left could sabotage a thread about wild cards and turn it into an issue of race. Where on earth do you people get off? You just seem intent on causing division.
We are in 2024 and one's race or heritage is completely irrelevant as to whether they will succeed in tennis or not. Financial backing may, but I suppose you will say that certain people from certain backgrounds are financially disadvantaged because of who they are which is absolute nonsense, the sort of propaganda spread by the BBC.
Let's get back to the tennis shall we. The cream will rise to the top regardless of the colour of their skin.

I don't know what world you live in but it's not the same as mine

(And I've sat in actual federation meetings that can tell you this is most definitely not true in tennis either - and this is further down the line than where it has the biggest impact anyway)

Indeed, I sort of wonder if you're deiberately saying this tongue in cheek, just to get a rise ? smile

But it's true that it could probably have a thread of its own - however, when a thread is no longer hugely active (because we know who the wildcards are now) then there's no harm if if goes off on a different path

There was certainly nothing tongue in cheek whatsoever in what I wrote or was I saying this to get a rise, even though those on the political left get triggered at the slightest thing, heaven forbid you should challenge the ideology with facts or logic.

As for the world I live in, I live in the real one, not the leftist world of woke which is having a pernicious effect on society and exists to divide, put people into boxes and constantly invent problems and issues where there are none.  In terms of being disadvantaged, white working class boys are now bottom of the pile, they are the lowest achievers.
I won't apologise for any of the facts in my two posts  to those of you who exist in a post truth world.

Let the tennis begin.

I completely agree about white working class boys - I assumed that was covered already in your 'heritage' part

But to say that race and social class is 'irrelevant' to tennis achievement (or achievement in general) is wrong - it's not leftist or woke - it's just wrong (IMO)

Lol. Second post where you went on a rant, and then tried to draw a line under it. I think there's only one person here hijacking the thread with their politics.

The biggest hurdle to playing Tennis is whether a Parent plays or not, now to be fair that is less likely in some communities for numerous reasons but if you look at the background of nearly all our Tennis players, they have a parent that played, whether it be to a reasonably high standard like KB, HD and JD or socially. Dan's dad played Squash and introduced him to that 1st.
If a junior shows the talent, there will always be a coach that will give up their time for free if necessary to nurture it.

I am the Mother of a Mixed Race Son and I can absolutely say that the biggest barrier to him was his mates telling him that people like them don't go to these places/play these sports/listen to this music etc not white adults like me saying the same.
When people in authority keep saying that there is under representation (which there actually isn't in British Tennis at the top compared to the make up of our Country) that then perpetuates the cycle.
Also having seen lots of lower level junior tournaments around our area, the cultural makeup reflects the surrounding area, if anything it is white kids not playing, and if they are white, they tend to be Eastern European.

Never imagined such a fuss would emanate from my post which was based around how pleased I was Paul received a wild card. You have to be in it to win it...

.and call me a sentimental old fool (rather than a looney lefty hmm ), but I dont believe anyone can fail to be moved by Pauls story. Or fail to understand that race, heritage, socio eco background can have an impact on tennis success. Bottom line, tennis and travel are expensive and being different is hard especially for a child.

I like facts.  Its not hard to find research papers on the impact of sociology economic factors on the likelihood of succeeding at tennis (a couple of links to examples below)

Certainly from my perspective, tennis and any other aspect of life should be a meritocracy where other factors such as race are completely irrelevant.  In that regard I agree with you.  But there seems to be some contradiction in the other aspects of your post.

To quote your post, "You just seem intent on causing division."  I have to say that calling people you disagree with the 'looney left' is unlikely to lessen that division and more likely to exacerbate it.

Like you EP, I was delighted to see Paul Jubb receive a WC.
