Wimbledon wildcards

I seem to have less issue with Ajla getting a wildcard than most on here

The Committee, it seems to me, want to give out the wildcards on merit - to say 'well done' to someone who is a bit more known to the public and is playing well above their ranking

They're not really concerned with whether she's got an SR or PR or whatever - that's admin, so to speak, whereas theirs is a public statement

And it's true that Ajla beat four (!) top-60 players at Birmingham

that's pretty amazing

And two of those top-60 players are actually top-40

And she made the QFs twice at Wimbledon

So it's fine by me .....

Am not saying she doesn't deserve a wild card on merit but more that she didn't need one.

Although a similar situation to the Olympics where some players could choose to enter on a special ranking or ITF Place for Grand Slam champions.

Yes, but that's a little like saying we shouldn't give yesterday's WTA finals prize money cheque to Jessica Pegula because she doesn't need it biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Although the ITF took a different stance in that once entered and accepted with a SR the player couldn't then decide to take the WC, as Osaka reportedly wanted to do.

The issue I have with Ajlia getting a wildcard for Wimbledon is not as much as for the French Open where she was given one over Emma who should have got one based on being a recent grand slam winner. Also she had just beaten highly ranked French players Garcia and Parry to knock France out of the BJK Cup. Or maybe thats why she didnt get one ! At least no French players got Wimbledon wildcards. Not that there were any real contenders.

I do agree that it would have been better to give a couple more wildcards to younger players rather than Heather and Miyazaki. Im happy that Millie made it through to qualifying but she should have been given at least a qualifying wildcard in the first place.

Each slam operates separately dont they - there isnt some sort of wild card master plan! So wimbledons decision will be separate from France and presumably divorced from any thinking on which players got one at previous slams. And wasnt Tomljanovics wild card in France linked to a reciprocal deal the other slams have put in place which, for its own reasons, the LTA and Wimbledon stay out of.

So Wimbledon has decided Tomljanovic for their own reasons- time to move on I would say; players now need to be good enough this week to get through quakes and find their own way to the main draw!

It's actually the other way round. Osaka wanted to take a WC and the Japanese Tennis Association announced as such. But following discussion with the ITF, she eventually chose to use her Special Ranking. The ITF couldn't force her to do so.

Kerber's situation is slightly different as she wants to play doubles, and the only way she has a chance of qualifying is by using her special ranking. Osaka doesn't want to play doubles so no reason for her not to take an ITF Place. But she didn't.

What's slightly messy too is that the ATP gave its players an extra tournament to use their Protected Ranking for the Olympics but the WTA didn't. So the women have yo decided whether they want to use a SR for the Olympics.

Think that's a bit apples and oranges. Tomljanovic was already accepted into the event. What Wimbledon has effectively done is given Tomljanovic a US Open wild card that she might not need anyway if she gets her ranking up.

Tip The M&S Easter Swiss mini eggs are £5.50 a box (actually substantially cheaper than Aldi or Lidl) They then drop to half price on Ocado after Easter and I bought the maximum number of boxes hence why I still have some left although this is my last box.

Save some for us! Ive got a bottle of Baileys staring us in the face, but it feels wrong when it is 25 degrees outside !

biggrin  I've got some Easter Percy Pigs left too, Cola flavoured.  The Weather is perfect for a chilled Baileys or add some Vodka and some crushed ice and make a frozen drink with it in a blender

At first glance, not a bad set of draws although Millie has drawn Rodionova [Q7]. At least they are all in different sections so not in direct competition.
