2025 Grass calendar

Eastbourne has been in a bit of trouble with withdrawals I agree so it's downgrading is perhaps not a huge surprise.

I appreciate this discussion is about 2025, but this year there are also some other European grass tournaments - notably 2 WTA500s in Germany...

Not a surprise to read this. Good for them.

Totally agree Lambda. There's a general lack of ITFs still, a few years ago we had Manchester and a small-field event in Southsea as well.

WTA seem to be trying to boost the non-UK grass events, having a 500 the week after a Slam is not going to attract the best field.

Southsea was pretty pointless - it only lasted two years so an experimental tournament

I think any events that bring high quality tennis to different bits of the UK are worthwhile, especially in a squeeze grass season with limited playing opportunies. We used to have a nice grass swing across the summer but Frinton, Felixstowe, Oxford have all been long gone.

The latter few all appear on the British Tour these days; Surbiton no doubt to follow.

Six years ago the BT tour event at Felixstowe attracted quite a few ranked players but nowadays these events are primarily for juniors.

For 2024 at least, the British Tour grass events seem to be:

North Oxford 27 May - 1 Jun (Tier 2)

West Worthing 9 Jun - 14 Jun (Premier Tier; winners get into LTA Wild Card play off plus ITF event wild cards)

Frinton 17-22 Jun (Tier 2)

Felixstowe 24 - 28 Jun (Tier 1 event)

Giffnock 14-20 Jul (Tier 1 event Scottish Grass Courts - Winners get £1250)

Ilkley 29 Jul - 3 Aug (Tier 2 - as opposed to the earlier Challenger level event in June)

Caroline Wozniacki will be playing at Birmingham, with a wildcard, apparently

In 2024 grass events, Ilkley field is announced

No Brits but a really interesting draw, some decent players there. Liam is in the alts list and presumably some wild cards will be given.

On the mens side, the Ilkley list appears a lot deeper than Nottingham - not at the top where Nottingham has more top 100 players, but a deeper overall entry, I would say.

I hope there are going to be alot of withdrawals - apartfromJodie and Lily the highest Brit on the list is Fran at 56th alternate !

I know, right? Ilkley, though, is often weak for Brits, in past years it has pretty much been the wild cards and, as our stronger players are at a) Queens b) Edgbaston c) others play the Wild card play offs we dont often get Brits going deep in the event or many playing in the main draw at all. Still, a good week though. But the 2025 calendar, for Ilkley at least, is an improvement - probably not for other events like Surbiton , but definitely an improvement for Ilkley, I think, at least from a British playing perspective

They'll be withdrawals. Gaiba hasn't released its entry list yet and a lot at the top of the list will go there.

I would really like the LTA to move one of the M25/W35 events for the year to the first week of Roland Garros and to play a Grass event somewhere. gives all our lower level players a chance to play on the grass before playing a higher level in the Ch125 category. Seems a logical approach so wont happen.
