Sonay in great form, worth a Wimbledon MD WC?

No. Winning 25ks does not give a main draw WC to Wimbledon. And her run has come from mostly winning against mid to low ranked players. She has played 1 top 250 player this year and lost, and until yesterday that was the only player she's played this year that was ranked higher than her. 16 of her 19 matches this year have been against players outside the top 350. She may be winning a lot, but almost all those wins are matches she should be winning.

Agreed. Lets see wha5 she does in the grass season first. She did get some good results last year.

 Possibly.....

She got a MD wildcard last year, with a couple of good results but nothing sure fire stellar

And she's been injured this year so it's not been poor form that's meant she's been off the radar

Yes, grass court results will be needed but definitely a possible - she's liked by the AELTC/LTA, is young, and this will get noticed

Of the 3 UK tournaments the LTA has hosted this year, Sonay played 2 and won both. Loughbourough 35k hard indoors Jan, Notts2 35k outdoor hard May. (with Mika winning Notts1, we've won all our home fixtures)

Anyway, it'd be good if these successes were rewarded somehow in the grass season - and Sonay, unusually for a Brit, given the number playing at a higher level on wildcards - does have a 50%+ winning record on grass.

WRT Wimbledon MD WCs, she should certainly be a contender. But Wozniacki, but Osaka, but Kerber, but Venus... not that many left.

True but, Wimbledon usually give 2/3 wcs to next in. The above can take two of them still leaving 3/4 for the brits.

Probably Lily, Heather and Emma are the dead certs atm.

It's a no for me with Venus Williams, she's 43 and only played six matches since last Wimbledon and only won one of them. I would also say not Angie Kerber either at 36 and hardly played/won this year either.

I'd much rather Sonay got a chance if she continues to win especially if she manages to do well across the grass season.

The French federation seemed to manage very well to ignore Halep AND Wozniacki AND Osaka AND Kerber AND Raducanu AND anyone else they didn't want to give one to, ex-Grand Slam winner or no

Kerber and Williams are former champions of Wimbledon and Haley was for drugs reasons so not great PR.

Halep was ex Roland Garros champion and has served her time (and a lot more, and been hard done by, if you buy that narrative, which a lot do)

Raducanu is a youngsters' favourite

The French love Caro Woz

...

But STILL the FFT didn't care - 'just say no' is there motto

(I actually believe it was because there were SO many that it was easier for them to say no - and the same applies to Wimbledon - no favourtism, just say no to all of them like the French - you've got to give it to them, they have 'couilles')

At what point should they no longer be in the frame though. I just don't see why being a former champion should give you a WC forever even if you're no longer playing regularly on tour. It just seems unfair on young up and coming players. Especially as it's not their home tournament.

Well, I suppose it's not unfair in that it's discretionary

i.e. there's no obligation to give them a wildcard (hence, the French approach, just ignore them all)

But the committee can if they want (which I guess is no different than for any player) but it seems OK to say the ex-champions will get 'priority consideration' - but can still be ignored
