Boys & Girls: J30 Dublin, Ireland - hard (Week 12)

Because we've got a lot of players in Dublin, it can have its own thread

I think we'll be relying on the boys though, to justify this .....

BOYS:

All four qualifiers were GB lads, namely: Leo Wright; Rafe Samuel; Henry Redfern; and Lucas Ebert

And the first three have all got R1 wins too (with Lucas still to play)

Ellisson Minnaar (how many double letters can you have in one name?) did wonders in beating the top seed

GB wins too for Rhys Lawlor, Charlie Ruffell, Rhys Watters, Harry Lumb and Alex Winder

Joe Mazingham still to play

GIRLS

Abi Redman was our only qualifier but she went out, in R1 today

As did Alice Haddad

However, we got two wins, from Sophie Johnstone and Eva Senior

BOYS

We had four guaranteed QF spots, but Ellisson makes it five as, having beaten the top seed, he continued his run, beating a Portguese lad

Rhys Lawlor beat Charlie Ruffell

Rhys Watter beat Henry Redfern

(q) Rafe Samuel def. (q) Leo Wright (who retired at 0-6 1-5 down - again, not impressed)

And Alex Winder beat Harry Lumb

in the GIRLS, Eva Senior lost and the result of Sophie's match is yet to come

I dont, for a second, support anyone retiring at 1-5/0-5 down. It is terrible sportsmanship. However, the LTA and ITF combined have made this happen.
The World Tennis Number is being used for acceptance in all adult events in GB, including British Tour. It is also being used as acceptance for ITFs if a player does not have an ITF ranking.
WTN only takes into account completed sets when it calculates. I have seen players retire on their opponents match point just so the set doesnt count and doesnt make their WTN worse!
UTR on the other hand, calculates as soon as 4 games have been won. WTN needs to change its rules!

Thanks, Rose - an interesting point - that's daft - completely agree, they should change it

(doesn't apply here, obviously, as the player does have an ITF ranking and is a long way off playing adults - although they did withdraw from doubles too - unlike some instances we've seen - which shows something was obviosuly not right)

Rhya Lawlor beat Minnaar and Rafe Samuel beat Watters, and Winder lost, so the SFs are as follows:

Boys SF

[5] Rhys Lawlor v (q) Rafe Samuel

IRL v CZE

In the girls, we've had better luck in the doubles, and the top-half SF is:

Alice Haddad & TUR v Abi Redman & Eva Senior

Thrilled to see 2009-born Rhys Lawlor make the final

He'll now play the second seed....

Interest still left in the girls and boys doubles too

In the boys doubles final, Joe Mazingham & Harry Lumb will be going for gold against an Irish pair

And in the girls, GB hopes rest with Abi Redman & Eva Senior

But poor Rhys got absolutely hammered in his final

Lost 0 & 0

But if you're going to lose, you might as well make it quick

Ouch for Rhys! But well done Abi and Eva and Harry and Joe!

CD, how do those performances match up against previous results e.g. are there any first titles at this level that would be worthy of a PoM nomination?

Just me, but I wouldn't give a PoM for a J60 doubles title, for players who aren't dead young

Separately, Athina Schlepphorst has reached the final of the singles in the J60 in Panama (I normally do an 'other' thread, but I think it's only Athina)

Oh, no worries. I just don't follow juniors enough (yet! you're slowly converting me!)  to know the backgrounds of any of these players and whether this represented progress for them. Just aware the current PoM is still a pretty short list. smile

It is but that is also fine! It ends up being what it is! Im sure it will grow this weekend and next week by a few players though !
