Other events, 2024 - week 10

After the huge success here by Flora and Freya last week, here's hoping for similar exploits this week

J100 South Africa

So far, going well - both girls are through to the QFs

J30 Norway

Congrats to 14 year-old Rosie Clifton who qualified and then won her R1 match before losing in R2 - that's her first ITF points and will get her a ranking

Matilda Cabrera Burns lost in R1

The big event in the ultra-junior juniors this week is the U12 Super Auray event

Nearly all the big names have played here

And with our girls team having won the Winter Cup (Naina KapoorDasha Jones and Sophia Cuninghame), you'd hope - maybe - for some nice results

But Dasha Jones lost yesterday in her first match (with a rather forced, laboured game, that didn't inspire confidence for the future)

Naina got a win, though (Sophia isn't here)

Bella Rebel, however, who is there with Helen Parish, and wasn't part of the team is doing well - she's won two matches, including 0 & 0 in her R2 match

In the boys, Fred Fabricious lost in R1. As did Max Sokol.

But Pekko Pfundstein has got two wins

And Kai Hodkinson had a BYE and then won in R2

At Super Auray, Bella Rebel won her second match on the trot by 0 & 0

Her French opponent wasn't great, to be honest, and Bella has a weird technical problem on her forehand (the takeback and plane of the racket on contact point)

But Bella has a decent serve and plays through the ball well, getting her weight going forward

In fact, it's not that difficult to see that Helen is coaching her - compared to Dasha, say, Bella is was more energetic and forward playing in her stance, rather like Helen

Pekko was beaten without too much trouble by a tiny Italian boy

Kai won but I didn't see any of that match

Flora is on a roll !!!

But risks playing three matches tomorrow

J100 South Africa

Flora is into the final, for the second week running

And is also in the semis for the doubles

At the Super Auray Naina Kapoor lost her match (in a relatively lacklustre showing)

That leaves just Bella Rebel - although she's playing the girl many would consider to the the overall favourite in the next round

I think everything is finished elsewhere

I'm going to try and see Kai's match tomorrow - he's the only one I haven't caught so far this week

Max Sokol (GBR) is also into the doubles final (and Ginny Chen is in the consolation final)

Bella was well beaten today, the score was fair, but she played well - again, there's quite a lot to like there and was easily the best of the three GB girls this week. With some technical work, she'll have a good base going forward

Kai's match was not a great one by either lad - unlike the semi between the French boy and the other, which had some very exciting, entertaining tennis

However, Max Sokol and partner provided a very fun doubles match - our boy and partner unfortunately lost in a MTB, but it was good tennis and the noise of the crowd was awesome - for an U12 doubles match !!!!

Two days late, but finally the South Africa event board has been updated

Flora was SO close to getting another singles title but:

FINAL: Jahnie van Zhyl def. Flora Johnson 6-2 3-6 6-4

BUT....

FLora+ did take the doubles title, 6-4 6-3

It's been a great two weeks for her

And, indeed, the girl highlighted as the probable favourite (and who beat Bella) did go on to win the overall championship without any real trouble (although the semi was a nice tussle)

I agree - brilliant name !

I'm hoping she'll still be around to play doubles later in her career - there are several players, often Hispanic, with names such as 'Angel' and African families now often seem to favour virtue names, such as Temperance, Prudence and even Obedience

It's just perfect

Marvellous name - not tennis, but my wife runs a Rainbows unit (youngest age of girl guiding) and they had a member called Ruby Rainbow, which worked in context and was also beautiful, I always thought!

Our daughter is called Hope, which fits nicely with the theme of African names above, sort of, (and is relatively popular in the US as a name)!

But Bella Rebel is the best one! Perhaps she could play mixed doubles with one of the Italian Tobacco brothers?
