Well I watched the match (albeit on a small phone) and I really enjoyed it. Yes, it was patchy and yes the double fault count was high (but so was Osakas). I was never in doubt that she would find a way through though. Under pressure she pulled herself back from 0.40 in two service games, her tactics on long rallies worked alot of the time, but mostly it was the more than glimpses of her very special talents.. angles, flexibility crouching to retrieve sometimes, speed and nice attitude. I saw her stand-out qualities again which was lovely. Just needs to stay physically fit and untroubled mentally. Well done Emma.

Thanks Julia, does tie in with my ongoing reasonably optimistic views about Emma, patchy as it may be for now.
The talent is very much there. In the medium to longer term I feel she is GB's main prospect of big success. I still put her ahead of Katie B in that regard.
I'm with Julia - I watched the match too and notwithstanding her opponent's errors and Emma's bad serving patches, overall the game is there - aggressive, fantastic backhand angles, great dropshots - attacking but clever and thoughtful. Assuming fit for a full year, I'm confident Emma will be top 30.

Oops, hit post too soon!
Agree with both LordBrown and Julia, based on what I saw of the match. Masarova had some horrible UEs (a couple of smashes she really should have made but hit long) and didn't play very well and Emma seemed to pick up her level when she needed to. I also liked that Emma generally seemed to be quite patient and waited for the right moment in some quite long rallies to unleash her winners.

I guess so. R1 has been completed but one or more of the seeds could yet withdraw before their first match.
I'm not sure where she's placed in potential LL order.
Also keep an eye on the doubles draw. Only 5 of the 16 matches have been played so far and there is already one alt pair (Kalinina and Yastremska in with CR64 based on their singles ranking). Harriet and Heather might be considering signing in - either as a pair or with higher ranked players.
