Lol ! Alex has already decided to skip the grass-court season for this year and concentrate instead on the European clay circuit. His plans as far as I know, are to take a rest week next week and then play 2 futures in italy and then two in Holland.

Fair enough. He knows the score and wit results like this he'd be justified!

Go Alex! That's really good, especially as his rd1 match hadn't given him much time on court!

We also had a short interest in the doubles....

Clad (GBR) / Hayes (IRL) lost to the 4th seeds.

My preview for today's big match: Slabinsky v Fornell-Mestres

QF preview: Alex faces Spanish 4th seed Marc Fornell-Mestres for a place in Saturday's semi-finals. Fornell-Mestres is ranked 232 places higher at 356 in the world rankings and the stats make him favourite for this match as he's been on good form on Spanish clay for the past few weeks, winning Spain F13 and reaching the semis of Spain F14. However, Fornell-Mestres has struggled somewhat in his first two matches, being taken to 3 sets by players ranked 874 and 590 respectively. Alex was in excellent form in round 2, outplaying an opponent ranked much higher and if he reproduces that form on Friday he has a good chance. Fornell-Mestres is the highest ranked seed left in the draw so the winner of this quarter-final will be favourite to take the title here. Slabinsky v Fornell-Mestres is 1st on court 6, starting at 11.00am GMT.

QF: (LL) Alex Slabinsky WR 596 lost to (4) Marc Fornell-Mestres (ESP) WR 350 by 3-0 ret.

Ouch! I hope Alex is ok. Having come back off his break clearly playing well, I hope he didn't badly injure himself.

Oh that is a shame...a tournament full of retirements...

Does anyone know the extent of the problem?

Luckily it wasn't an injury, it's suspected food poisoning.

See my report on Alex's official website for more details:
http://www.freewebs.com/alexslabinsky/latestnews.htm

I'm not sure how serious it is but if it's just food poisoning hopefully he'll be ok in a few days. Alex didn't say exactly what it was, but I think it must be food poisoning as he was ok on Wednesday night and then felt terrible on Thursday morning.

It's a real shame as otherwise Alex had a great chance of winning and reaching the semis. Still, it's been a good tournament for him and he'll move up approx 20 places to about 577 when the points are added on, on June 6th.

I think he still plans to take next week off before resuming competition the week after in Italy.

Oh, that is good news. Well sort of - food poisoning can be pretty horrible obviously, and Alex was doing so well this week it's a pity he didn't get a proper chance to go further. But if he was going to take a week off next week anyway, with luck he'll be fine by the time of the Udine Future the week after next.

Kind of glad to here that it isn't anything serious but food poising is pretty horrible if you get it.. Also it's a bit sad to see if he would of got any further in this futures tournament if he didn't pick up food poisoning.
