January 2024 Player of the Month Vote - Semifinal Group 1

Here we go - 2 groups of 11; top 3 from each group will go to the final.

Full list of 22 below in nomination order, so you'll need to read through to look at players bios

VOTE WILL CLOSE MONDAY EVENING AT 6.30PM, THE FINAL WILL BE POSTED SHORTLY THEREAFTER

1 - Alastair Gray - for breaking back into the Top 500 having come through qualies and reaching the 2nd round of the Challenger in Portugal. Also reached the SF on the M25 in Germany, taking out the top seed in the process

2 - Oliver Crawford - for deciding to come and represent the wonder that is Great British tennis and then reaching the FQR of AO qualies.

3 - Heather Watson - for reaching the doubles final at the Brisbane WTA500 event and going back to British #1 in style.

4 - Lloyd Glasspool - for winning the ATP250 doubles in Brisbane and making a great start to both 2024 and a new partnership (with Jean-Julien Rojer)

5 - Katie Boulter - for beating Jessica Pegula World No 5 in the United Cup.

6 - Jacob Fearnley - for winning both the singles and doubles at the M25 event at Esch-sur-Alzette, having come through qualifying in the singles and then beaten the #1 seed comfortably in the semi-final.

7 - Jack Draper - for reaching the final the the ATP 250 in Adelaide and beating 3 top 32 players, including the top seed ranked 13.

8 - Joe Salisbury - for winning the Adelaide ATP250 and showing he and Rajeev have carried over their excellent form from the end of last year.

9 - Ella McDonald - for winning the Loughborough and Sunderland W35 doubles with different partners, beating the much higher ranked 1st, 3rd and 2nd seeds at Loughborough. Predicted new CH of 381, up 88 places.

10 - Kyle Edmund - for winning the M25 in Loughborough after such a long layoff from injury and for returning to the Top 500, and for following that up by winning the M25 in Sunderland a week later.

11 - Sonay Kartal - for winning the W35 in Loughborough in her first tournament since last September.

12 - Cam Norrie - for getting his best GS win by ranking in beating Caspar Ruud and making the 4th round of the AO for the first time, and for then pushing Zverev all the way to a final set tiebreak in that 4th round match.

13 - Luke Johnson - for winning the doubles at the ATP75 in Nonthaburi, which gave him a new career high and then followed up with his biggest title to date, winning the Challenger 125 event in Belgium and smashing his way into the Top 100 of the doubles rankings in the process.

14 - Ali Habib - in successive weeks in Doha, an M15 QF and M25 SF, both from qualifying. Will take out his CH 1281 and enter the top 1000.

15 - Daniela Piani (age 16) - for winning the singles and the doubles title at the J100 in Glasgow.

16 - Neil Skupski - for reaching the final of the mixed doubles at the Australian Open (with Desirae Krawczyk)

17. Andy Lapthorne - for winning the Australian Open Quad Wheelchair Doubles title, unseeded, with US partner David Wagner. Marvellous achievement!

18 - Anna Brogan - for three valiant efforts, in defeat, in her first (W35) tournaments of the year.

19 - Alfie Hewett/Gordon Reid - for winning their 5th straight Aussie Open Wheelchair Doubles title and remaining undoubtedly the top pair in the world

20 - Olivia Nicholls and Beth Grey - for winning 4 consective MTB's on their way to the W75 doubles title in Porto

21 - Viktor Frydrych - for reaching the final of the Australian Open Boys Doubles (with Petr Brunclik)

22 - Anna McBride - for defending her AO PWII Championships singles and doubles titles. She won the singles without dropping a set and only losing 5 games out of the 65 games she played. In the doubles, she and partner Sophia Schmidt (a scratch pairing based on rankings) dominated in the round robin format, only losing one set. All of this despite a wrist injury that flared up towards the end of the tournament and a very intense schedule for the event.

For me, it was Andy Lapthorne hear - no one jumped out at me, and winning the quad doubles, unseeded, was a great effort and deserving - he is a slam winner after all and only Alfie and Gordon can say that in this group - and they have done it lots of time before!

I voted for Daniela Piani, as that was her first tournament win at that level in singles (and only her second in doubles, I think), so a definite step upwards.

Interesting how this group has 15 votes and the other has 19!? Usually, group one gets one or two more votes than group two. People see it first and maybe vote and then dont get to group 2. Its easy to see from the number of votes, group one always gets more. But strangely, getting a fair few less votes this time than group 2.
