Boys & Girls: 2024 Tennis Europe Winter Cups (U12/U14/U16)

Last year's under 12 Winter Cup was cancelled, but this year it is the first to start with qualifying taking place this weekend, and their finals in 2 weeks time.  Mixed news as the boys qualify, but the girls do not.   The U12 boys (Frederick Fabricius, Kai Max Hodkinson and Oskar Laskowski)  beat both Romania and Turkey 3-0 without dropping a set.  They play Slovakia for seeding rights.

The girls U12 team (Dasha Jones, Naina Kapoor and Sophia Cunningham) easily beat the Netherlands 3-0  but lost out today against Croatia 2-1 (Dasha winning her singles).

U14 and U16 qualifying takes place next weekend

The boys U12 lost their seeding match to Slovakia (currently 2-0 with Oskar and Kai Max losing their singles). The U12 girls won their 3rd/4th place play-off 3-0 against Latvia

This weekend it is the turn of the under 14 and under 16 teams to attempt to qualify for their finals. The under 16 girls were to be led by Hollie Smart, but she has been replaced by Edie Griffiths. Along with Tegan Bush and Isabella Walker they face a herculean task to qualify. They play Austria tomorrow, which they stand a decent chance of winning. However if they do so they face top qualifying seed Spain, who include JWR16 Charo Esquiva Banuls - very rare that someone so highly ranked plays in this tournament (hence no surprise that Hannah K and Mika S are missing).

The boys under 16 team of Mark Ceban, Rhys Lawlor and Liam Channon are seeded second in their group, taking on Slovenia tomorrow. A fairly strong looking home nation Italy bar their path to the finals though.

In the under 14s the girls team of Daisy Wootton, Rosie Cho and Megan Knight will also be hard pressed to qualify. They are seeded 3 and take on France tomorrow, but will probably need to beat top seed Germany as well (who have two players ranked in the TE top 20) to qualify.

The under 14 boys appear to have the best chance to qualify, with the team of Niall pickerd-Barua, Scott Watson and Eric Lorimer seeded 1. They have a bye on day 1 before tackling either Portugal (seeded 4) or Denmark

Getting past Ida Wobker (Germany) will be a very big ask

But, yes, Megan was in good form at Les Petits As and is one of my faves (but then, so is Ida

It was tight, and did indeed seem to rest on Megan's shoulders:

U14 girls:

GB def. France 2-1

Megan won, 6-2 6-0

Rosie lost, 6-2 5-7 1-6

And Megan & Rosie won the doubles, 6-4 7-6(7)

The U14 girls do end up playing top seeded Germany as expected. The under 16 girls beat Austria as expected (Isabella and Tegan both winning in straights before Tegan and Edie combined for the doubles) but now have to face Spain. Disappointingly the under 16 boys lost 2-1 to Slovenia (Mark winning his singles) so will play for the minor places

U14 Boys QSF: (1) GBR v (4) Portugal
U14 Girls QSF: (1) Germany v (3) GBR
U16 Girls QSF: (1) Spain v (3) GBR

The under 14 results are in with the top seeds prevailing in both cases

U14 Boys QSF: (1) GBR lead (4) Portugal 2-0

Scott Watson won 6-1 6-0
Niall Pickerd-Barua won 6-4 6-3

They therefore qualify for the finals and play (2) France for seeding rights

U14 Girls QSF: (1) Germany lead (3) GBR 2-0

Megan Knight lost to the aforementioned Ida Wobker 6-4 6-3
Rosie Cho lost 7-6(8) 6-2

They play for 3rd/4th in the group tomorrow

The under 16 girls have done well, with Isabella beating the top seeds number 2 6-4 6-3 before Charo Esquiva Banuls levelled things with a 7-6(1) 6-1 win over Tegan. They therefore have to play a deciding doubles.

It's no disgrace that they lost today

Megan is very strong for a 2011

But a year makes a big difference and Ida Wobker is a super young talent (although there's actually only 6 months between them)

And Rosie is decent, but so are a lot of the other players out there

I do wonder, though, how Cesonyte (the girl who beat Rosie) has a Lithuanian flag next to her name ... I've read she's got dual nationality but all the same ....

Well done to the U14 boys and good luck to them v France

So close for the under 16 girls who did a lot better than I expected against Spain. The doubles featured Tegan and Edie against Banuls and the Spanish third player - the Spaniards edging home 6-4 4-6 [12-10]. So Spain win 2-1 and we play for 3rd/4th.

 So, so close......

Well done girls, all the same, and good luck tomorrow

In the seeding match the under 14 boys just lost out to France 2-1. Scott was edged out 6-7(5) 6-2 7-5 by Quentin Dodin, before Niall went down 6-4 6-3 to Pablo Pradat. Eric and Niall won the dead doubles 7-5 6-4. They will therefore be unseeded in the finals in Germany in 2 weeks time.

The under 14 girls beat Denmark 3-0 to finish third while the under 16 girls finish 4th after a 2-1 loss to Belgium (Edie winning her singles). The under 16 boys finished fifth after a 3-0 win over Monaco and 2-0 over Croatia (Mark and Rhys winning their singles matches)

The under 12 finals started today - in Sunderland - but our boys team lost 2-1 to Switzerland, so will play for the minor places

U12 boys finals QF

GBR 1 Switzerland 2

Kai Max Hodkinson lost to Noah Honsberger 1-6 1-6
Frederick Fabricius lost to Jonas Waelti 3-6 2-6
Hodkinson/Laskowski beat Honsberger/Mitchell 6-2 6-4

However there is better news from the girls. Usually losing in the qualifying competition at the semi-final stage would have meant no qualification for the finals. However I hadn't realised that the finals of both under 12 events are being held in Sunderland, and as hosts we gained preference over the team that finished second in our group (Croatia - who beat us 2-1). Unlike the boys the girls have won their opener to reach the semi-finals

U12 girls finals QF

Czech Republic 1 GBR 2

Kristyna Nikodymova beat Naina Kapoor 6-2 6-3
Beata Maresova lost to Dasha Jones 4-6 0-6
Nikodymova/Maresova lost to Cunninghame/Jones 4-6 2-6

SF

GBR v Slovakia
