Week 3 & 4 - Australian Open Grand Slam - Melbourne, Australia Hard (doubles)

I did not see that result coming. And Machac without a doubles ranking although he did defeat Djokovic in doubles in Davis Cup. Of course two strong singles players can play good doubles, and often strong on return.

Wow!!! So,dis for Ram and Salisbury

Brings up the age old debate as to whether 2 singles players will be an established doubles pair.Clearly Machacs super tight shorts didnt restrict his movement biggrin

Machac quoted as saying that they were both on fire on the return and Zhang serving well. There are plenty of singles players that underperform in doubles Slams. I think it's more the case that there are singles players who could have high doubles rankings if they competed more.

Yes, very much player dependant. I don't see that any general rule spplies to the expectations re top singles players playing doubles. Some will have the skillset and instincts to perform well. Some won't.

Our remaining pairs went out overnight and we have no representatives in the last 8. That must be the first time in quite some while - someone will tell me not - even if it is only a perception. Nonetheless, disappointing for the first major of the season.

A couple of new pairings though for our lads, so now a few months to build their understanding and form ready for the next ones in 4 or 5 months time

Koepfer and Hanfmann going well here, never seen Koepfer in particular as a doubles player , although he has a neat and tidy game. But they are certainly progressing well as two largely singles players against the specialists.

Notice that Lloyd is down to play with Henry Patten in Montpellier. Perhaps just because a 250 is too low level for Rojer points wise?

I think it is because it clashes with the Davis Cup qualifiers - NL play Switzerland 2-3 Feb, this event clashes with that; Rojer is in the Dutch squad

If Bopanna wins tonight, he will be world number one next week, first time in his career and aged around 43, I believe.

Also wondering if there has been an Indian number one before. Dont think Amritraj family ever had one of their clan make it, certain no one else from India has?

Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi? Pretty sure they both made it to number 1
