Interested to see that Sophie Drakeford-Lewis is having another go at tennis.
Sophie (who was in the the same school as my daughter in Reading) was British number 1 at U18 back in around 2013 I would guess when about 15 or 16. However she decided to stop tennis in favour of Netball which she was also very good at. She went to Bath University and played for the Bath Premier league Netball team, and England Juniors and now plays for the Surrey Premier league Netball team. On the fringes of the England Netball team but not quite made it fully into the team I dont think.
I noticed she was on the entry lists for the upcoming W35 tournaments but clearly doesnt have any rankings at the moment.
She played in the G2 event in Redbridge in February and lost in the final to Brooke Black. and is currently in the G1 tournament in Nottingham seeded 7. Won her first 2 RR matches and playing her 3rd now. Obviously hoping for a WC to Qualies in Nottingham next week.
Yes, I saw her play her match at Redbridge against letitia romanova
Very high quality match
Far better than her next one that day
Went to a mtb
She's certainly a tall woman with a mighty strike on the ball
What is going on at Nottingham? They're falling like flies with retirements and walkovers.
Anyway emerging from the pools into the QFs
Daniel Little [1] v Tiran Sanghera Ewen Lumsden [4] v James Mackinlay Jamie Diack [WC] v Michael Shaw [3] Charlie Swaine [WC] v George Houghton [2]
Katrina Stresnakova [1] v Nao Nishino Sophie Drakeford-Lewis [7] v Lucia Cassidy [6] Jaquelyn Ogunwale [8] v Eliz Maloney [3] Brooke Black v Alice Gillan [2]
A WC for the winner and qWC for the runner-up into one of the Nottingham 25ks over the next couple of weeks is the bonus prize (if they're British).
Good wins for Jamie and Charlie against seeded Michael and George. Good effort by Nao to take a set of Stresnakova. Interesting to see how Sophie does against her in the SF which will be starting within the hour.

Charlie building on his recent junior nationals form. Good stuff
Charlie continues his good form making it into the final against Ewen. Charlie and Ewen played in the round robin stage earlier in the week with Ewen coming out the winning 10-6 in a MTB.
Semi-Finals Ewen Lumsden [4] d. Daniel Little [1] 6-2 6-4 Charlie Swaine [WC] d. Jamie Diack [WC] 4-6 6-4 7-5
Final Ewen Lumsden [4] v Charlie Swaine [WC]
In the women's the final goes with seeding as Katrina got through a 2hr 3 set battle with Sophie and Alice defeated Jaquelyn. For Sophie to take the world number 560 to a close 3 sets with so few matches and when she's a professional in another sport is impressive. Katrina and Alice have meet at least 7 times over the last few years - 5 in the UK Pro League and 2 ITFs with Katrina leading the H2H 4-3. They met 3 times last year with Alice winning 2 to 1, including co-incidentally exactly a year ago today in Nottingham with Alice the winner.
Semi-Finals Katrina Stresnakova [1] d. Sophie Drakeford-Lewis [7] 6-4 3-6 6-4 Alice Gillan [2] d. Jaquelyn Ogunwale [8] 7-5 6-1

Hi Lambda - have you heard or read anything anywhere about the UKPL? Their website is still alive but hasnt been updated since before Xmas and there is no sign of any events. Presumably it has had its day, but I wondered if you knew anything more?
A wildcard of some description would have been valuable for her - can't be easy trying to launch yourself (if that is indeed what she's trying to do) when you've been out of the circuit for such a time (pretty much ever)
Glad to see Jaqui O on court - has she been in the States? Big win for her over Eliz, given her current and previous rankings
Not surprised that Alice hammered Brooke
And the wildcards will be nice for the men - both of them are rather far off in ranking
Stresnakova is not GB. Looking at the entry lists, Alice is first in line for a MDWC anyway. For the semifinalists, Jaquelyn Ogunwale is probably second in line for a QWC so it would be sense maybe to award both losing semi-finalists with a QWC especially given their achievements in a fairly high ranking draw.
Yes, i know Stresnakova is not GB That's why I said it was a shame Sophie didn't get the win Usually they don't move the wildcards down to semi-finalists so it'll just go back in the pit for normal allocation Which is why it's particularly a shame for Sophie and why the wildcards will be especially important for the men (as it won't make much difference to Alice)

sophie played at my local club when she was a junior and i know the coach quite well who coached her when she was younger till she was about 12. she won our ladies club championships when she was 11 years old.
Ewen Lumsden and Katie Stresnakova came out the winners today
Ewen Lumsden [4] d. Charlie Swaine [WC] 6-3 6-3 Katarina Stresnakova [1] d. Alice Gillan [2] 3-6 6-2 6-4
Ewen gets the MDWC to a M25 in Nottingham and Charlie gets a QWC. As mentioned Stresnakova isn't British so doesn't get a WC and wouldn't have needed it anyway, and Alice is already in qualifying for both W35s. So they'll go back into the pot with at least 3 of the other 4 WCs and QWCs that have been on offer for the W35s through the various competitions that won't be used.
