Top half of the draw blown apart. Only Azarenka has played in a GS final and Svitolina in a semi final. Maybe Zheng who defeated Katie will make the final.

Zheng who beat Katie won a close third set tie break against Wang who beat Emma.

Still on for Zheng to reach  the final as the only seed and highest ranked player  left in this half of the draw . So unpredictable  that the rankings of the other 3 players  left in that half  were 50, 75 and 93 at the start of the tournament.

Bit of a missed opportunity for Emma, if only she hadn't taken sick and been broken at the start of the third set...no

She would have played Zheng next which would have been an incredibly tough match at this stage of her comeback.

 Too right ---- no

Caro Garcia, and Iga, and Azarenka, and...... must all be sitting with their heads under the duvet wondering if it's worth getting up in the morning

Yastremska (which my spell check is trying to change to tastemaker) gets to the semis as a qualifier. As a qualifier ever reached a final?

I know it was just one of many but the photo of Yastremska and her little sister, sitting on their suitcases, having been sent out of Ukraine by their parents right after the invasion, after spending 48 hours hiding in an underground carpark ..... just horrific

Well done to Lyon for taking her in - France is now developing itself as a Russian/Ukrainian expat tennis centre hmm

The irony of their taking players from these two countries.

Ukraine now has 5 players in the Top 32 on the live rankings which is quite an achievement.

I think France would take an old man and his donkey if they could hold a racket at the moment....

Or maybe I should say an old woman and her donkey, as women is the particular problem

Their #2 in women's was Russian until last year

Their #2 in girls (very soon to be #1 in girls) was Russian until last year

I'm sure they're trying to encourage Mirra Andreeva and all the players based in France now to change

And it's not just women:

Their #1  in boys was Australian until a few weeks ago

I just saw a list of qualifiers who reached the semis in the open era. She's the third in the last 4 years. It had only happened twice before 2020.

In reaching the  semi finals Yastremska has a  similar record to Tatiana Maria in 2022. Maria lost in the semi finals of Wimbledon having lost in the first round of her 8 previous Grand Slam singles and Yastremska's record is the same. As at Wimbledon the last 4 includes a player from Belarus in Sabalenka and a Ukrainian ( Svitolina at Wimbledon and Yastremska here) This tournament might have worked out differently if Vondrousova had not  been injured, Svitolina not  retired and Rybakina won the long tie break and not Blinkova.  Not that that made any difference to our players although in losing to Zheng, Katie might have lost to the eventual winner.

It was a Facebook post which I can't remember the source. It was Nadia Podoroska and Alexandra Stevenson along with Emma and Yastremska, the other one was in the 70s and someone I'd not heard of.

There's a list of qualifiers who reached the SF of a slam in today's Times in the middle of an article about Yastremska. Scroll down to read it.

I have seen the article you mention and  the list is Christine Dorey Aussie Open semi finals 1978, Alexandra Stevenson Wimbledon  semi finals 1999, Nadia Podoroska French semi finals 2020, Emma Raducanu won US Open 2021 and now Yastremska here.

Christine Dorey had a great year in 1977, playing in all the Slams and made the quarter finals at Roland Garros, but after her Aussie Open semi final, she had injury problems I think and later played as Christine Matison.  I seem to very vaguely remember seeing her play in 1978 at Wimbledon, which was the year that Tom Okker made the semi finals of the men's as a wildcard entrant.
