Week 3 & 4 - Australian Open Grand Slam - Melbourne, Australia Hard

Watching the highlights, the MP was a really bad show from Emma. She hit a drop shot, her opponent retaliated with one, then she tried to smash a backhand directly at Wang (it hit the net), The handshake after was also super cold - I wouldn't care about this if it wasn't for a rather unsportsmanlike MP.

Err, I think Emma was trying to win the point. Not the worst option in the situation. Poorly executed.

C'mon, this wasn't the local doubles night but trying to remain in a match at a Slam.

If you can, watch the 32 minute tie break between Rybakina and Blinkova. It had some amazing sequences, particularly the point at 18-17. It was the longest tie break in grand slam history.

The amazing point was at 18-17 not 16-15 as I said at first. Mind, the next point was pretty good as well.

I just tried looking ahead to see if Emma is down to play anywhere. She apparently has a WC to play in the WTA500 Abu Dhabi Open on Feb 5th. I can't find anything about her for the matches on 29th Jan.

Tennis abstract has calculated the chances of a tie break going to 42 points.

... assuming both players are trying to finish the tie-break!

If svitolina wins today, we have 3 Ukrainians, 3 Russians, 2 Belarus in last 16. Trying hard to make sure we dont forget.

There are 2 qualifiers in the last 16. Doing  better than the protected rankings and wild cards. Anisimova best of the protected rankings. Blinkova who beat Rybakina in that remarkable tie break lost in the next round. If Svitollina wins 3Ukrainians in the last 16 of a Grand Slam singles would be a record.

And the world #1 has just lost to 19 year-old Novoska

Well done to Linda

It's true that Iga wasn't quite firing on all cylinders

But Linda really took it to her, got her backhand placement really working

Top half of the draw blown apart. Only Azarenka has played in a GS final and Svitolina in a semi final. Maybe Zheng who defeated Katie will make the final.

Sabalenka has lost 6 games in 6 sets so far - thats pretty ruthless.

With only 4 of the top 16 seeds left, shes got a great opportunity, albeit in probably the tougher side of the draw. Decimation though!

Zheng who beat Katie won a close third set tie break against Wang who beat Emma.

Emma definitely tries to nail one straight at her opponent on matchpoint probably out of frustration, but its well within the rules.

I remember Serena Williams used to do it to her opponents all the time knowing that her opponent would then try to nail one back at her when they had the opportunity. Serena always knew this and just blocked and finished the point. Clever tactic really, but I dont think Emma was thinking that far ahead at the time.

Still on for Zheng to reach  the final as the only seed and highest ranked player  left in this half of the draw . So unpredictable  that the rankings of the other 3 players  left in that half  were 50, 75 and 93 at the start of the tournament.

Bit of a missed opportunity for Emma, if only she hadn't taken sick and been broken at the start of the third set...no
