Anna tweaked her shoulder in training last week, which affected her forehand and serves. She lost many service games from 40-15 up. The opponent played very well, was consistent and was hard to break down. The match lasted an hour and 30 minutes. BUt Anna went down 6-2 6-0.
There is some excellent tennis on show at this event, which is very high in quality.
Thats a shame but great experience to be able to play at this level - as you say, the top seed (Emma Wilson) is a world ranked ITF player and the overall level is strong - there is some decent money for the winners, so players will be motivated.
So what is next for Anna? Presumably the AO again, are they doing Anna's events this coming year and are you planning on going down there?
Thanks!
Anna will rest her shoulder this week and then has grade 3 singles and doubles just after Christmas. Plus a grade 3 singles in Aberdeen after New Year. So she will be kept busy.
The top four world-ranked players get invited to the AO. So yes, Anna and I are going down there for two weeks, leaving Edinburgh on the 11th of Jan. A week in Brisbane training, followed by a week in Melbourne to play a mainstream event in Hume on Monday the 18th, followed by Anna's AO starting on the 24th of Jan. Eva from France is attending, so it will be a tough event. The players can choose their double partners this time, so Anna asked Kelly from OZ to play with her, which caused a bit of fun on the home front! I assume Hanne and Eva will partner, making the doubles a good battle.
The latest LTA article is here. They get some things wrong. Anna was not born in Nottingham, she was born in Preston.
Excellent, glad it is on! Any chance the other 3 slams may introduce a similar para event from what you know?
We bent the ear of the LTA President at the AO earlier this year. She knew about Lily, but not so much about Anna. We planted seeds about Wimbledon.
However, Wimbledon currently does not have the capacity or space to hold an event. I think the Queens exhibition event was the next best thing. Which was a nice event.
France has, until recently, not valued their players. This might be changing with Eva on the team, but there is no news about the French Open.
I think the same applies to the USA. Without competitive world-ranked players, the interest is low.
I think there is also a big push to get it into the Paralympics. At the moment, much to the frustration of Virtus, the Special Olympics gets all the sponsorship and media spotlight. Their focus is on inclusion and the lower end of ability, which distracts from the top-level performance. Anna would be considered too high a level to be allowed to play at that. Getting Paralympic status would change everything for the sport.

It seems like it should be considered, for sure. Is that just Virtus who are pushing the agenda to the IOC or are other bodies helping?
