Clearly playing Spain on clay wont be easy, but Britain have to fancy their chances
Head to head
Alfie is 18-1 career versus de la puente - hes won twice in straights sets in 2024 alone and beat him on clay last November in the Tour Finals in Barcelona
Gordon is 6-0 career versus Caverzaschi , including a straight sets win in 2024
And of course Alfie and Gordon are the clear worlds top doubles pair.
Of course, you cant count your chickens but a World Cup title has got to be the hope here!?
In todays two finals , the big news was China upsetting the Dutch team 2-0 in the womens final; real turn up for the books. NL had their top team out as well. Look out for China in the Paralympic event.
In the quad final, host nation Turkey lost out to Chile in the final, well done to Chile in a 2-1 win.
Britains womens and quads teams took 5th place in both events.
The win for China is a repeat of their 2017 victory in the womens but more remarkable for the fact that world number 1 , de Groot, lost her 145 match winning streak. As the itf summarised
Ziying Wang defeated world No. 4 Aniek van Koot 6-1 6-3 before Xiaohui Li ended the 145-match winning streak of world No.1 Diede de Groot to earn a remarkable 6-3 6-2 victory.
I was calm on the court and followed our coachs plan, said Li, who is only in her second full season on the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour after winning nine singles titles in 2023. After the match, I am now very emotional, but I managed to stay calm on the court.
Later this week, the big money ($70k) Italian Open Series 1 event takes place - with a field of 12 men and 8 for the women, with doubles as well, some good players should show as they build to the French Open.
In the big money Rome series 1 event, Alfie and Gordon come off wheelchair World Cup glory and take part in a 12 player field.
Alfie is top seed and Gordon 4th and both have byes- they could meet in the semis.
They will partner each other as usual in the doubles.
Lucy Shuker and Abbie Breakwell play their respective opening last 16 matches in Madrid today, both are also in the doubles field with non British partners.
In Barcelona, Lucy Shuker won her opening match and moves into the last 8.
In Rome, the ITF is showing no scores updates although play should have started yesterday. Not sure if no play actually happened or rain got in the way? Who knows!
In Rome, Alfie Caesar won his qf match and now plays Gordon Reidio in the semis, look forward to that. The lads are also in the doubles semis although they got a bye to that round.
