Progress Tour 2024

Seeing as we usually have dedicated threads for the British Tour and UKPL, I thought perhaps we should have a dedicated thread for the top money events from the Progress Tour too rather than putting it in the UTR thread.

This week is the £10k event at Cardiff Met, with, what appears to be, a 32 draw for the men and a 14 draw for women. The winners get £2,000, runners-up £1,000 and SFs £500. In addition the men's winner receives a WC to a January GB ITF 25k and the men's runner-up a qualifying WC.

Top 4 Men's seeds
Ewen Lumsden [1], James Davis [2], David Quayle [3], Patrick Foley [4]
I assume whoever was originally #1 seed withdrew as the seeds are all in the wrong place in the draw, such that the top 2 seeds are in the same half of the draw.

Women's seeds
Katie Stresnakova [1], Freya Christie [2], Sophia Hurrion [3], Liana Sharrat-Blanksby [4]

Main draw is underway with Men's R16 and QF and Womens QF and SF tomorrow.

Draw and scores
(to note, I find the events tab, under which the draws are, doesn't appear in some browsers)

Good to have a separate thread for it, Lambda

And good to see the names of some of those players on the list

16 - missed a lot of tennis due to injury. Highly touted junior despite injuries

Both men and women draws have gone with seedings with the top 4 in each making the last 4.

The men's SFs are tomorrow, while in the women's SFs today Stresnakova defeated Liana 4 & 2 and Freya defeated Sophia 2 & 0.

Finals, Cardiff 10k
Ewen Lumsden [1] defeated David Quayle [3] 4 & 4
Katie Stresnakova [1] defeated Freya Christie [2] 4 & 4

Thanks for these updates, Lambda.

Does the Progress Tour have any sort of league table or ranking a la British and UKPL tours, or are the events standalone tournaments?

As far as I'm aware they are standalone events. I think the purpose is to provide more opportunities to play and earn money rather than anything else. Match results do feed in to their UTR and WTN ratings.

I know many dismiss the WTN, but it can be quite useful. I didn't comment at the time, but I remember last year CD waxing lyrical about Hollie Smart beating someone ranked several hundred places higher than her in the junior rankings, but their WTNs at the time suggested Hollie was the better player and should have won.

I have nothing against WTNs. They are supposedly right, predictevly, about 70% of the time. Which is very much in line with the UTR (I've seen some figures for the UTR being 74%) And they do keep tweaking the algorithm to try and make it better. I think they changed it twice last year. Needless to say, some people complained, some liked it. But presumably those figures should continue to improvs. And it's not supposed to be a science, it's just another tool.

I was waxing lyrical about Hollie because Hollie (born 2009) was rising so fast through the ranks, had a nice result, and everyone needs a cheerleader

In amongst all the British events in Glasgow, Roehampton and the juniors in Liverpool this week, there is also a Mens 25k UTR event at Cardiff Met by The Progress Tour. As usual with UTR events, it is very difficult to get any info on this event. However, the group stage is complete

Group A was won by Ewen Lumsden with 4 wins and Sean Hodkin finished group runner-up with 3 wins and 1 loss
Group B was won by Josh Goodger (4-0) with runner-up Luca Bluett (2-2)
Group C was won by Marcus Walters (4-0) with Ed Pudney runner-up (3-1)
Group D was won by Phoenix Weir (4-0) with Edison Ambarzumjan runner-up (3-1)

Everyone now progresses to their respective knock out stage to decide final placings.

This week is the £5k grass event in Cromer with ITF WCs available for the men's finalists and a Wimby WC play-off place for the men's winner.
The men's and women's winners get £1,000, runners-up £500 and semi-finalists £250.

Players entered here included Stresnakova, Maloney, Dudeney, Rawson and Rylatt in the women's draw and Weightman, Simkiss, Wendleken, Little, Story and Coquelin in the men's draw.

Unfortunately, The Progress Tour no longer appear to publish draws and results so it has been impossible to keep track of what is happening. But, finally, they have posted some info of who is in the finals today with 3 of the finalists back from US College for the summer.

The women's final is between Alicia Dudeney and Allegra Korpanec-Davies.
The men's final is between Oscar Weightman and Hugo Coquelin.

Nice to see Oscar back properly (I assume) from injury

And the wildcard playoff place is a nice perk
