RE: The Surbiton Trophy

Arvind has played Moodie before, in the Leeds Future in 2001 when he won 2 & 0! 2001 is a long time ago, but let's hope memories of that previous match give Arvind a little more confidence than he'd normally have going into a match like this.

W.Moodie (RSA)(1) vs A.Parmar (GBR)(WC) 7-6(5), 7-5

not to be for the big man, still a close match as i thought serve dominated by the look of it.

No Brit in quarter finals.

And to think I was excited about the grass season

give it time, surbs is a really tough one now, such a strong field is more like a 100k event, its very rare for any of our players to make it that far in them. boggo was the one who lost to a player ranked lower and even delic as the last DE is good.

when we get a few more players in at queens and nottingham it might look up.

Match reports and quotes from Baker-Bloomfield and Colin Fleming's singles and doubles matches this week are now up on: http://www.freewebs.com/topscots

Colin says he's playing Queens singles qualies on Sat, he's hoping for a doubles wc for Queens [he says he'll probably know on Sunday], then in midweek he's off to Raynes Park for the wc playoff and then he and Jamie Murray are also hoping to play Nottingham and if necessary, Wimbledon qualifying.

Some info on other matches this week:
Bogdanovic 6-7[2], 6-3, 4-6 Delic: Speaking afterwards Boggo said that he was unable to cope with the Delic serve and that was the deciding factor in the match. Boggo broke twice in set 2 and had the initiative going into the 3rd set but lost his serve early in the 3rd set and wasn't able to break back. Apparently Delic is 6ft5.

It was one of these matches where the draw looked good for Alex but in actual fact it was quite nasty. Boggo also struggled against the Delic serve when he lost 6-4, 7-6 to him in US Open qualies 2005. In that match Boggo got really frustrated as whenever he got a chance on the Delic serve, the guy came up with an ace or service winner. According to Judy Murray, Delic also has a "single-handed backhand to die for." Delic has had quite a poor year apart from a challenger in Zagreb where he reached the semis on clay. He's been playing a lot on hard courts and I think that the faster grass courts will be more to his liking.

Martin Lee 7-6, 2-6, 4-6 Hyung Taik-Lee: Martin lost his concentration in set 2 and played quite poorly but in set 3 he had a sackload of bp chances but failed to convert any of them. It was apparently a nightmare match for an umpire. Hyung is now a veteran at 30 and is ranked 106 with a career high of 52. He's won a challenger and reached 3 challenger semis and an ATP quarter-final this year so Martin did well to push him that close. If he doesn't get a wc, he's got a great chance of qualifying for Queens I should think.

Arvind Parmar 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 Lars Burgsmuller: Arvind put his loss of the 1st set down to nerves. He said "I got tentative. I wasn't relaxed but then I did, and with nothing to lose, took it through. It was all a matter of relaxing as he is a good professional - it was a matter of being patient." Arvind attacked the net a lot during the match and finished it off with a high backhand volley. This takes Arv's head-to-head v Burgsmuller up to 3-1. He won 6-2, 6-1 in Aussie Open qualies 2000 and 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in Nottingham hard court challenger 2002.

Just shows how good Alex's performance in 2003 in reaching the final was. Even Greg has never made it past the quarters here and no Brit has ever won Surby.

Arv's loss wasn't really unexpected, I don't think his passing shots and returns are good enough to beat a quality serve-volleyer like Moodie. His backhand seems to have become something of a weakness over the last few years.

Very disappointed on Richard's defeat, that was a real opportunity to make the quarters, Sabau's a clay-court specialist.

I agree with CZ's predictions except that I think Arthurs will beat Reynolds. I predict a Fish-Moodie final with Moodie to win.

Thanks for all those quotes USF, very interesting to read.

Whilst I'm obviously disappointed that none of the Brits are left I don't think we should write off the grass court season yet. I'm hoping for better things in the next few weeks!

That's ok Bethan

The biggest disappointment in this tournament was probably Boggo not making it through a couple of rounds given his form so far this year. However, such was the strength of this field there were no "easy draws" in rd1. Not getting any qualifiers was also disappointing but the top 4 seeds were all ranked close to 200 and all 8 seeds were inside the top 250.

For some reason we never generally seem to get any qualifiers at Surbiton or particularly much British success. I think it's due to 2 factors, [1] it's the first grass court tournament and a lot of the Brits haven't fully adjusted yet to the faster courts. Against a really strong field they're going to struggle. I wonder why the LTA don't schedule 2 grass-court futures events during French Open qualies and week 1 of Roland Garros. They had one at Oxford last year but took it out for some reason

[2] It has been the general consensus for a long time that Brits have an extra advantage on grass because it's their home surface. This is now a mistaken opinion. About 7-8 years ago this was the case because lots of the Brits were serve-volleyers and had games tailor-made for grass. Now all the Brits [with the exception of Martin Lee, Dave Sherwood and Jonny Marray] are baseliners. They only practise on grass for about 8 weeks per year and most of them don't list it as their favourite surfaces, preferring indoor hard courts instead. At Surbiton, the grass courts are very traditional, really fast - suiting players with massive serves and especially serve-volleyers [the reason why Moodie has won so many times here]. It's tough for baseliners at Surbiton because the balls skids through and keeps very low and passing onrushing net players can be difficult.

I'm confident that things will improve in coming weeks as the grass at Queens is quite medium paced and will suit the Brits more which is promising for the qualies. The Brits always tend to perform well above their rankings at Nottingham aswell and there's an exciting mini-national championships occurring at Raynes park next week where competition should be especially high with precious wildcards at stake.

The promising aspects from this tournament were: Lee Childs' superb form in qualies destroying two opponents ranked so much higher. Jamie Delgado and Alan Mackin also put together impressive performances, they were just unlucky that Arthurs was in their section. It was also great to see Parmar back in form on the grass, hopefully he can take that form onto Queens. With no Boggo in the wc playoff, he's definately the favourite for that.
