Somewhat confusingly, it's showing as Ponchet having withdrawn from the singles and Heather getting a walkover, but Heather and Babos having withdrawn from the doubles, giving Maia and Ponchet a walkover.
The WTA website is showing Heather having a walk over in both. Ponchet had a long singles yesterday so perhaps something happened there.
But even more irritating for young Else Jacquemot who was within a whisker of beating Ponchet yestreday
And throws up interesting questions about the Aussie Open wildcard that the FFT have to give out - is Cornet a slamdunk, has Ponchet blown her chance, or should Elsa have it.......
Heather Watson and Timea clear favourites but watch out for Celine Naef who has been shooting up both singles and doubles rankings recently.
- Good luck Heather
I only really care about the singles
A lot of people on the Russian forums etc think Erika is better than her sister (Mirra) and well-underanked.
I've never been a huge fan but I've watched her this week - and she certainly has been playing a very good percentage tennis game - Celine was basically (IMO) the more aggressive, more front foot player - but Erika hung tough and managed to just keep edging up the pressure. Her win over Seidel was a little more straightforward but still needed closing out
Celine is still a junior and mentally a little up and down - but she has a lot of talent in her locker and will learn how to use it better.
Seidel is also a junior and a little static/stiff in her tennis but has some good power there
Erika, of course, is only one year out of juniors - it's a very young batch
Rather over-shadowed by her younger sister but very much on the upward curve (even if I'm not completely convinced)
Heather will certainly have a 'playable' match - she won't be beaten for power and strength - but she's going to have to keep her length and distribution right up there
