The first two sets were incredibly close and could have gone either way. They run marathons in less time than it took to play the first two sets and Harriet did a lot of running. She must be very fit.
But Dubai won't count towards Australian Open entry.
Noone is saying that she should be aiming to play every week, but considering her inactivity recently may cost her a direct place in the Australian Open draw, it seems bizarre.
Maybe she will get enough points from Andorra to tip her over the edge, but it could be close. Especially as Yuan has now overtaken her, and Doing could follow later today.
And it is disingenuous to suggest she had to go to Japan; there were European based events this week, and next.
I'm sure Indie's right and she'll fine, but would it be SUCH a disaster if Jodie missed out on the main draw? She has 30 points to defend from qualifying last year and only 10 guaranteed for the main draw with a good chance of getting a high ranked player and losing first round. However with a high seeding she is quite capable of coming through qualifying, getting 40 points and playing the main draw. I certainly feel that's a good route for Harriet whose lowest counter is the mandatory 10 from last year's Aussie Open.
Meaning what, please? Jodie wouldn't be in qualifiers with her ranking at this level. That said it is really good news for the women's game that Harriet seems to be regaining her form and moving towards a ranking that represents her ability. Also good luck to the blokes in the David Cup - think they may need it!
