Week 45 – BJK Cup Playoffs – GB v Sweden – Copper Box, London – Indoor Hard

Oh dear this is painful to watch. Jodie was playing beautifully at the start of the match but after a single missed overhead it all fell apart. And now the Swedish girl has so much confidence she's playing some really good winners while Jodie keeps missing.

Problem is that Jodie has basically played in the Swede here, who is now playing really well (comparatively) and very freely. Up on the baseline dictating entirely. She's absolutely fallen to bits, and really was under no pressure at all at *4-0.

Feel for her, this is the stuff of nightmares for a debut. But she's stopped the rot finally. And can still turn this around, needs to channel all that frustration and nervy emotion in the right way here.

1-2*

Finally Jodie breaks the run and holds serve. 1-2*
Come on Annie, sort her head out !

Yes, but what the flip is Anne K doing?
This is exactly what a captain is supposed to be there for. And Anne must have known this was well possible.

Anne's looking very serious at the change of ends.  After winning her first game for ages I think she should be encouraging Jodie - telling her that was great and she can do this.  Jodie's problems are all mental and she needs snapping out of this negative mindset

Is that Isabelle Lacy on the sidelines with the GB squad?

Jodie's game has fallen apart as I feared.

Gosh this court really leaves you as a sitting duck when you come forward. So much time to pick off a pass.

Broken from *30-0 with very lazy footwork. One break I still thought she could turn this around. Don't think she can now.

1-4*

I suspect she'll get dropped tomorrow, this is a shambles, and I'm not convinced she's the sort of player for who it would light a fire under them to right the wrongs.

Yes, Isabelle has been with the team all week. Good experience for her (apart from this match)

Jodie loses 6-4 6-1. Not good (and despite her issues in form Im pretty certain Harriet would have won this one. She's tested and proven in the environment and the speed of the court is probably a better fit for her game). The Swede was solid but Jodie made her job fairly straightforward. Did Jodie win a single 30-30 or deuce point?

Katie should be fine but it puts a different pressure on her.

And I agree with CD. A captain can't do the player's job for them but Jodie needed something from Anne at the changeovers when she started getting anxious and irritated unnecessarily in the first set, and there was nothing there.

Assuming that Katie can win both her matches that leaves Anne with a difficult selection choice. Does Harriet play both singles and doubles - or will Maia be brought in for what would be a crucial decider.

Harriet tomorrow, no brainer.

Yeah we shouldn't need the doubles still. Katie should win both her singles and Harriet should beat Hennemann to take the tie.

The occasion was too much for Burridge she beat herself in tie.

I thought that was truly awful

Awful from Jodie - OK, you have a wobble, that's normal, but she never, ever looked as though she was really buckling down to try and fix it. It just steam-rollered away from her.

And truly, truly awful from Anne.
That is her job. Her main job.
Even selection is less important (given that selection is usually pretty much dictated by ranking and availability).
Her sole key job is to coach her players through the stress and through the moment. To get them to the win. It's A1 obvious that new players, players like Jodie in particular, are going to be mercurial.
She absolutely failed.

It's well possible that Katie will now win and we'll win the doubles.

But I thought this was pitiful. And I know it sounds a tad cruel but I mean it to.

Yikes. Poor Sweden. At least it's not at home for them. At this rate Larsson would be better coming off the captain's bench. She can still hit a good ball.

It wasn't poor Sweden in the 1st match and Larsson wasn't needed. It was more like Annie K. needed  coming off the captain's bench. Because we never had any Fed Cup ties ( as it was then )at home between 1993 and 2019 some of the away  shambles were never seen by a home audience. Jo Konta had at least 3 poor away  matches before she made it. Let's hope Emma gets fit and one of the  promising younger generation is ready  soon.
