2023 PLAYER OF THE SEASON WILD CARD NOMINATIONS THREAD

Remember , no right or wrong reason for nominating or, indeed, voting on a wildcard. Your reasons are the right ones!

We have 5 nominations so there will definitely be a vote, lets hope it reaches 20 and its jam packed with choice!

and to also clarify - although I mentioned Maia and Heather as possible qualifiers through the womens doubles or tournie wins, and Katy D also, none of them are qualified and may not do so, so can be considered as a wild card nomination if anyone feels they want to do so- theyll just get taken out later if they do qualify through other routes !

Ummm well with my surname of Roberts I think there could be a touch of bias lol

Wildcards are always biased - thats the problem or the positive of them! And why not , good nominations IMO!

Personally, I think anyone that wins a slam should auto qualify!

Haha. Maybe in retrospect, I agree. Neal is in, as is Henry, and Alfie and Andy in wheelchair. Alfie and Gordon won slams in wheelchair doubles but Gordon also isnt in ( or them as a pair). Ill see how the wildcard nominations go but maybe Gordon needs a similar leg up to Joe?!

edit - decided to add Alfie and Gordon as a pair, my last nomination

Wild card nominations list (maximum 20) - closing date Nov 30th.

1. Joe Salisbury - although it hasnt been his best season ever Joe ,with his long time partner Rajeev Ram, managed to achieve the magnificent accolade of winning their third consecutive US Open title. They have also qualified for the ATP Tour Finals and won an ATP 500 title as well. We dont get many slam winners and Joe is one of only two British senior pros this season to achieve that. It would feel wrong to not have a slam winner in the player of the season vote.

2. Jan Choinski - gained over 100 places in the rankings up to a CH 126 winning his second challenger title along the way.

3. Julian Cash - a new career high inside the top 50, 4 titles and numerous finals, including 2 ATP250s, with a particularly successful October. And all that despite the end of a long-term successful partnership mid-season.

4. Max Lendrum, 12 years old. Another Welsh up and coming potential star of the future.Coached by Francesca Lewis at Swansea (Mimis old stamping ground). Max beat the number one seed Frederick Fabricus to take the National U12 title at the Lexus indoor chamionship in Bolton in October - his first national chamionship title. Achieved without dropping a set and followed up by reaching the boys double final in the same event.

5. Viktor Frydrych - 17 years old  for winning his first ITF U18 J300 event in Beijing in October this year. Moving nicely up the junior ranking to mid 50s. Another up and coming star from Colwyn Bay in North Wales. As Chris Lewis Tennis Wales noted, from Viktor first practise sessions at Colwyn Bay they knew he had potential.

6. Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid - Alfie is already qualified individually for Player of the Season but as a pair, Alfie and Gordon are the real deal - winners of Australian, French and Wimbledon slams this year, the are the worlds top pair with 9 titles overall this season - Gordon alongside Joe Salisbury is the only slam winner not in the PoS qualfiers so far, so this gives him a chance to right that wrong as part of this dominating pair

Thanks for those who have nominated so far. There are still 29 days to go, so plenty of time for others to get involved, but there will also be a strict 20 nomination limit on the field, so dont leave it too late and miss out!!

But with players/pairs, we have enough for a vote now, hopefully - whichever way this goes, the maximum number of wild cards will be 4 (probably/possibly fewer) so a vote will be needed regardless.

7. Emily Appleton - for her dedication and progress up the rankings. She's also improved her doubles ranking to 139 from 194. She's done this by playing week in week out having played 28 singles events and 34 doubles events during 2023 to date.

thanks Lambda, good call. Work and effort rewarded. I was always a fan of her dad, Mike, from playing events near me, so always liked to see Emily do well!

Day 2 of 30! 7 nominations in, 13 left to go. Looking forward to more slots being filled. Anyone can nominate as many players as they want at any time, just add to the list and give a reason! No limits on numbers of nominations a member can make, just a limit of 20 total wildcard nominations in total.
