2023 PLAYER OF THE SEASON WILD CARD NOMINATIONS THREAD

So, November is on us and its time to start slowly thinking about player of the season. The vote will take place in December, and players have been qualifying through a variety of methods all year.

However, the qualifiers for player of the season may miss some deserving players for whatever reason - the process isnt foolproof. So far, 21 players are qualified. Through November, I expect between 2 and 5 more will become qualified through various means.

The player of the season vote will include either 24 or 28 players, depending on how November progresses. As such, the field will need to be filled out with 1 or more wildcards, and this is where the wildcard nominations process comes in.

Over November, we need people to nominate wild card contenders. A vote will take place in early December to select the wild cards. Before the vote, I will confirm the exact number of wildcards still available.

Here are the rules:

1) Nominations will close on November 30th.
2) there will be a maximum of 20 wild card nominations

3) nominations can be made by anyone at any time and for any reason over the course of November. Just add to the list that will be started below with a name and a supporting reason why you think the player deserves the nomination

4) any player or pair can be nominated, with the exception of players already qualified for player of the season - as they dont need a wild card! See the second post below for players who are qualified!

5) if a player is nominated who is already qualified, I will politely delete them explaining why - dont feel hard done by as they are already qualified!
6) if a player is nominated who subsequently qualified, I will politely delete them explaining why - dont feel hard done by as they will have qualified after you nominated them and wont need a wild card

7) there is no limit on how many players a single member can nominate. You could nominate 20 and fill up all the spaces. however, this is done on trust and Im hoping no one will do that - if they do, Ill take an exec decision to take some players out! But dont feel limited to one player and feel free to come back at any point and nominate other players if you feel they deserve it!

Those are the rules. The post below will list the players who are qualified already. In the third post, I will start the ball rolling with a nomination of my own, to set the tone!

please engage and I hope, if nothing else, this is a bit of fun!

Note - if nominations are slow, I may come back and add to the first one I have put up. I have a list of possibles. So, I may choose to add to the list with two or three as the month progresses. I foresee us needing between 1 and 4 wild cards to go through to the PoS vote, so I will make sure we have at least 5 wild card nominations in total to ensure a vote in early December!

Here is a list of those players already qualified who do not need a wild card and should not be nominated!

Dec/Jan PoM Andy Murray (1)
Dec/Jan PoM RU Mark Ceban (2)
Feb PoM Cam Norrie (3)
Feb PoM RU Hannah Klugman (4)
Mar PoM Jodie Burrage (5)
Mar PoM RU Billy Harris (6)
Apr PoM Fran Jones (7)
Apr PoM RU Hannah Klugman
May PoM George Loffhagen (8)
May PoM RU Amelia Rajecki (9)
Jun PoM Katie Boulter (10)
Jun PoM RU Anna Brogan (11)
Jun PoM RU Jodie Burrage
Jun PoM RU Katie Swan (12)
Jul PoM Henry Searle (13)
Jul PoM RU Neal Skupski (14)
Aug PoM Dan Evans (15)
Aug PoM RU Lily Miyazaki (16)
Sep PoM Dan Evans
Sep PoM RU Liam Broady (17)
Oct PoM Billy Harris
Oct PoM RU Mimi Xu (18)
In addition, a number of players are qualified who are number ones in their respective ranking lists, some of whom are listed above through player of the month. Additional players who are qualified are:
Wheelchair Mens # 1 Alfie Hewett (19)
Wheelchair Womens # 1 Lucy Shuker (20)
Wheelchair Quads # 1 Andy Lapthorne (21)

So there are 21 players qualified already.

In addition , I expect the list to be added to in November through the following means.

November player of the month winner and runner up
The womens doubles #1 is not confirmed (expect it to be between Maia Lumsden and Heather Watson- neither are qualified yet and are free to be nominated for a wild card)
The girls singles #1 is not confirmed (between Mimi Xu and Hannah Klugman but both are qualified already)
Most tournament title wins (several players could win this category with 5 weeks left. Currently, Alfie Hewett, Mimi Xu and Maia Lumsden lead the category with 6 counting titles; Alfie and Mimi are already qualified, Maia isnt and as such is free to be nominated for a wildcard)
The player with best record of finishing 3rd or 4th in player of the month votes who isnt qualified ( this category wont be known until after the November player of the month vote - currently led by Katy Dunne who isnt otherwise qualified and therefore is free to be nominated for a wildcard).

So those listed as qualified CANNOT be nominated for a wildcard. Those who might qualify and lead a category are not yet qualified and free to be nominated for a wildcard, but may get taken out of the list later. Those getting taken out probably wont happen until after the November player of the month vote has completed and/or the December 4th ranking lists for womens doubles and junior girls are released, although those positions may get confirmed sooner.

Wild card nominations list (maximum 20) - closing date Nov 30th.

1. Joe Salisbury - although it hasnt been his best season ever Joe ,with his long time partner Rajeev Ram, managed to achieve the magnificent accolade of winning their third consecutive US Open title. They have also qualified for the ATP Tour Finals and won an ATP 500 title as well. We dont get many slam winners and Joe is one of only two British senior pros this season to achieve that. It would feel wrong to not have a slam winner in the player of the season vote.

I think I have the stats right! If anyone wants to add to them/correct them, please do!

3. Julian Cash - a new career high inside the top 50, 4 titles and numerous finals, including 2 ATP250s, with a particularly successful October. And all that despite the end of a long-term successful partnership mid-season.

Remember , the list will stop at 20 players so dont leave it til the spots are all taken up!

And also, people can nominate more than one player - so if the list dries up, and you have someone youd like to add , then just add them, no one is counting !
It can be singles, doubles, men, women, juniors, wheelchair , a pair or even a team (national or county) . Nothing is out of scope!

4. Max Lendrum, 12 years old. Another Welsh up and coming potential star of the future.Coached by Francesca Lewis at Swansea (Mimis old stamping ground). Max beat the number one seed Frederick Fabricus to take the National U12 title at the Lexus indoor chamionship in Bolton in October - his first national chamionship title. Achieved without dropping a set and followed up by reaching the boys double final in the same event.

5. Viktor Frydrych - 17 years old  for winning his first ITF U18 J300 event in Beijing in October this year. Moving nicely up the junior ranking to mid 50s. Another up and coming star from Colwyn Bay in North Wales. As Chris Lewis Tennis Wales noted, from Viktor first practise sessions at Colwyn Bay they knew he had potential.
