Week 44 - ITF W25 - Sunderland, Great Britain Hard

It may be the virus that has been around the 3 tournaments. Hopefully not the injuries

Regarding discussion of wildcards I think it's very odd that when a player loses on one it doesn't count for their allocation so they get another one allocated effectively. So they could have four allowed but end up being given 6 or 7 when others could have had the extra ones. I know there is a lot of luck of the draw but that is allowed for with the four or whatever in the first place. I like it if wildcards are earnt...eg winning u18 nationals, or winning a particular high level British tour tournament. I also can't understand why players get MD WC when they could either go into qualifying on ranking or as qwc and then, if they are good enough they will qualify and get more matches for development purposes. Much less likely then to lose tough MD round 1, but current rules may encourage this practice, so either player has tough draw and gets a great win or lose but never mind they can have another wildcard after.

The decision of which players to put on which courts is really annoying me today. Would have liked to watch Katie.

 PaulM, I share your pain.

At the moment Swan is winning 90% of first serves, and getting around 75% first serves in. The troubled world is just that bit better when Katie's service game is on song.

Strange game - tennis, Emma Wilson beat the top seed yesterday and lost to a Q today.

Monumental effort from Swan to take the 2nd set to a tie break, having saved 10 of 11 break points. Service game dipped in this set.

Good effort from Alice, but nice to see Katie winning.

Katy said on twitter she was ill not injured so that's good.

I wonder if this virus affected either Emma today or maybe the number 1 seed who from nowhere she beat yesterday. Katy has now also said on Twitter she was ill.

Nice follow-up win by Mika after yesterday's retirement win vs Mona Barthel.

I know I'm one of the worst at all the rules but Mika is only 14 and when I look back at her result sheet this year (which is all in her birth year), she has had:

WC to Sunderland MD
WC to Glasgow MD
WC to Roehampton MD
WC to Foxhills MD
WC to Surbiton QD
WC to Nottingham MD
WC to Loughborough MD

Is that allowed?

Do they all not count basically because she lost in R1 in nearly all of them?

Moreover, or in which case, no matter how much of a fan one might be of her tennis, is that really warranted? Is that just Lewandowski doing the usual?

Looking at other's profiles, I realised that Mika is by no means out on a limb with her wildcards

Isabelle Lacy has had six main draw wildcards this year (not counting Wimbly qualis which is different)

And lost in R1 of the last 4

Now, as U18 national champion, obviously Isa has a slightly higher profile.

But it's still a lot....

To be fair to Isabelle she's only been able to have main draw WCs in Glasgow and here by using the 2 'merit' WCs that she got rewarded with for having won a match as a main draw WC in 2 events earlier in the year.

From my records, in 2023 Isabelle and Mika have received the most main draw wild cards with 6. In total 41 British women have received a total of 83 main draw wild cards this year, including Wimbledon WCs:
2 women have received 6 main draw WCs
1 has received 5 main draw WCs (Ranah)
2 have received 4 main draw WCs (Ella and Sonay)
6 have received 3 main draw WCs (Anna Brogan, Alisha Reayer, Danielle Daley, Jasmine Conway, Isabelle Cherny, Beth Grey)
10 have received 2 main draw WCs
20 have received 1 main draw WC

Including qualifying WCs, 84 British women have received 181 singles wild cards.

Obviously, not all of these are to British events.

Having taken a look at the rulebooks, there is no suggestion of discounting a wild card or tournament played as a wild card if you lose first match. The rules appear to be as follows:

1) Max 3 MD wild cards into 15k events

2) Max 3 MD wild cards into 25k+ events

3) Additional 3 MD wild cards into both categories for each tournament match win as a wild card

4) Age eligibility rules for maximum number of tournaments still apply

In the examples above:

1) Isabelle Lacy turned 17 during the year so the clock is reset

2) Can't work out how Mika has earned 6 MD wild cards at 25+k level when she only won a match at one of the first 5 events. That suggests she should only have received 4 wild cards.

Any thoughts anyone?

I think you missed the key sentence (Section X Part A) (my highlighting in bold)

"1. Definitions
a. Competition in a Professional Tennis Tournament
For the purposes of this Rule, competition in a Professional Tennis Tournament is defined as participation in the singles or doubles Main Draw or Qualifying Draw of any Tournament at which a player earns WTA ranking points (singles or doubles) or, but for the operation of the WTA Rules or the players violation of the WTA Rules, would have earned WTA ranking points."
